New Mumps Vaccine Shows High Effectiveness
Dr. Maurice R. Hilleman of Merck Institute reports a near 100 percent effective mumps vaccine using the Jeryl Lynn strain named after his daughter who contracted the illness. In tests with 402 vaccinated and 407 unvaccinated children, 98 percent of the vaccinated developed antibodies, while none of the unvaccinated did. Only two of 100 vaccinated exposed children contracted mumps. The vaccine is not yet available for general use.

Officials Study Chance of New Charge in Coogan Case
Abdominal gunshot wounds proved fatal to Raymond Coogan 39 of Mineral Point at St. Clare Hospital. Lafayette County officials and coroner weigh next steps as Mrs. Maguerite Wise 47 Calamine faces an illegal handling of firearms charge in the shooting. Coogan was found unconscious in a Cala mine pasture June 15 and died later after transfer. Wise released from jail June 16 to appear in Lafayette County Court June 19 before Judge Joseph Collins. A .22 revolver was seized from Wise’s home. Coogan, a Caucasian laborer born in Willow Springs, was a Mineral Point High School graduate and survived by his wife and several children. Couple Injured In Auto Crash In Three-Vehicle Evening
