The two lane stretch of U.S. 41 north of Fond du Lac earned the nickname death by own action Alley after a head on crash killed Henry Bratigan and his wife Clara M Bratigan both of Milwaukee. David D Wetzel of Wausau died in a separate collision near Wausau. Lyle Riechenberger of Oshkosh died from injuries after a tree collision on Highway 45 near Fond du Lac. Arthur Verville of Superior died after being struck while bicycling on the city outskirts. Authorities verified the fatalities amid a broader weekend toll raising the 1962 highway death count to 392.
