The Senate Finance Committee approved a $6 billion health care program for Americans over 65, linking it with Social Security and boosting benefits and taxes. The plan adds hospital, nursing, home health services and a voluntary supplemental plan, with major changes to Social Security earnings tests and wage bases.
About 100 golfers played and more than 185 attended a booster dinner at Monroe Country Club for the Wisconsin Student Aid Foundation. UW coaches including Milt Bruhn and John Erickson spoke as guests praised the Badgers football and basketball programs and Monroe’s championship team.
Cmdr. M. S. Kohli, who led nine men to Everest via four attempts, said there is nothing to support the existence of an abominable snowman in the high Himalayas. He noted footprints likely belong to high altitude bears or snow leopards after a decade of field work.
In New York the American Medical Association rejected calls to boycott the proposed Medicare program while warning against any health system that limits a doctor’s skill. The House of Delegates approved a resolution to review the law’s impact and act as needed. The Senate Finance Committee then cleared the Medicare bill for likely Senate passage in July.
In Philadelphia the city’s four largest grocery chains warn most stores will run out of supplies by Friday night if the wildcat strike by about 12 000 Teamsters Local 107 members ends unresolved. Gasoline and drug stocks are also dwindling as truck drivers continue the holiday.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower will deliver a keynote speech during a two day gathering of the Republican National Committee in Washington next week.
J Raymond Bryden 86 left a will providing flowers on his grave twice yearly and a tank of gasoline plus a substantial meal for mourners. The Allentown hotel owner, who died May 27 and was buried in Dunmore, left about $70 000 in estate and five shares to the Dunmore Cemetery Association floral fund for Memorial Day geraniums and a Christmas wreath.
Nine Green County community dairy queens were named last night in New Glarus and Monticello. JoAnn Hoesly, representing New Glarus, and Carol Babler, representing Monticello, join eight other finalists. The queens will attend judging at Belleville High School at 5 pm, with the Dairy Day parade starting at 1:30 pm and coronation at 3 pm Saturday.
A broad stock selloff in New York pushed the market down at mid day though a partial rebound limited losses. The Associated Press average fell 2.4 points to 316.2 while the Dow slid to 863.97 after weakening to 859.96.
Betty Pike and Kenneth Peak of Longview were issued a marriage license Wednesday at the county courthouse in Kelso. The couple’s names and hometowns appear in the Longview area text, noting the local filing of their license.
Republican National Chairman Ray C. Bliss dismissed top aide William Cody Kelly for violating staff standards after Frank J. Kovac alleged forcible entry into Kovac's locked desk by Kelly Jim Baker and two others. Kovac said the incident occurred Friday night June 18.
Monticello Community Club will sponsor a Homecoming Celebration July 23 24 and 25 with a chicken barbecue Sunday at Lake Park. Musical entertainment water show kiddies parade and community fundraising are planned. Harold Babler chairs the event with Karl Freitag Ed Quade Dean Zimmerman on beverages and Karl Duerst leading the barbecue. Proceeds fund local projects and lake park development.
Madison Wisconsin dairy market shows unchanged cheddar prices with demand from slow to good. Supplies of large styles ample or more, small types adequate to short. Cheddars 35-34 cents, 40 pound blocks 35-38 cents, single daisies 39-41 cents, long horns 39-39 cents, midgets 39-41 cents.
In Great Bend Kansas hundreds of teen agers with heavy equipment built a 200 yard temporary dike to hold back Arkansas River floodwaters. President Johnson declared Kansas a disaster area as losses reach about 22 million across ten counties with 350000 acres flooded and Topeka reporting multi millions in crop damage.
Green County Council of American Legion will install all new officers of Legion Posts and Auxiliaries at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Bank of Brodhead community room. Installing officers will be Mr. and Mrs. Jake Schurman. He is Third District Commander and she is district auxiliary president.
A bipartisan committee narrowly approves a $103.7 million revenue plan for the 1966-67 biennium. It boosts income tax rates, raises cigarette taxes to 10 cents per pack, imposes bank franchise taxes, and taxes corporations at 7 percent. The measure, framed as temporary to fund higher education, advances to party caucuses for the next steps.
