River Showing Signs Of Slowing After Flood Near Great Bend

The Arkansas River flood eased as Great Bend forecasters lowered the crest to 13 to 14 feet from 17. Levees were reinforced with sandbags while 2,500 residents were urged to evacuate lowlands. Three deaths and an estimated 22 million dollars in damage were reported by the Red Cross and Gov. Avery.

Pulling Contest Plans Arranged in Tornado Benefit

Final plans for a tornado disaster benefit tractor pulling contest were announced. The event is set for Sunday July 11 at 1 p.m. beside Twining Park on 14th Avenue with three classes and a total purse of 315 dollars. Burnett Kubly and Ambrose Wenger lead the organization. proceeds go to the tornado disaster fund. Tractors weigh in at Monroe Lumber and Fuel from 9 a.m. to noon.
