Doctors Disagree on Public Health Plan in Senate Testimony
Washington reports two Wisconsin doctors clashed before the Senate Labor Committee over universal health insurance. Dr. James Sargent of Milwaukee warned compulsory coverage would raise costs and lower quality, while Dr. Otho Fiedler of Sheboygan argued only a tax funded plan could reach the very poor and that voluntary insurance would fail. By 1945 UNRRA had bought 316 million dollars in U.S. military and other surpluses domestically and abroad.
