New Alice in Dairyland Arrives for Monroe Visit

Sylvia Ann Lee the 1962 Alice in Dairyland arrives in Monroe for a day of events. She will greet visitors at the Commercial and Savings Bank from 9 to 3 and 6:30 to 8:30 pm and attend a noon luncheon with the Chamber of Commerce. Queen results announced for nine county communities

Results from last week's Green County Dairy Spene in Browntown and head were released. Voting ends Saturday with finalists judged at a banquet in Brodhead next week. The county queen will be named just before the Daily Day parade in Brodhead on June 30. Barbara Severson leads Browntown with 27 votes and entries include Mary Cheryl Marty and LouAnn.

Talks Resume Friday in Milwaukee Strike Settlement Effort

Milwaukee editors and the American Newspaper Guild local have agreed to convene again Friday to attempt a settlement of the ongoing strike that shut the Milwaukee Sentinel since May 27. The negotiations aim to restore operation and end the work stoppage.

Slain Infant's Mother Faces Murder Hearing

Joyce Mary Day 22 of Orfordville will face a first degree murder charge at a preliminary hearing next Thursday June 28 at 2 pm in Rock County Court. She is held without bond in Janesville jail and requested attorney William Robson Beloit. A signed confession says she gave birth at the family farm last Friday and struck the infant head with a thick branch. The body was found in a shallow grave three miles northwest of Monroe on the Lowrance Pest farm owned by Henry Marty of Monroe. A pathologist ruled skull fracture caused the death.

Reynolds Seeks Special Master For Reapportionment Plan

Wisconsin Attorney General John W. Reynolds told a federal appeals panel he will ask Monday for the court to appoint a special master to prepare a recommended statewide and legislative district plan by June 30 1962. The court panel led by Judge F Ryan Duffy Jr urged an orderly reapportionment and set July 1 as the date to inform candidates of district boundaries. Reynolds noted August 1 as the latest filing date for nomination papers to avoid delaying elections.
