Scouts Praise Boys Attitude In Brave School

The Monroe Evening Times Sluggers school instructors Emil Belich and Allen Elger praised the players for their attitude and work as they evaluated a close competition to name the winner. Winners may join All-Star events and spring training with the Braves. Jackie Dammen stood out for catching under pressure.

Swiss Open at Monroe Club Monday

James Forbes of Monroe Country Club announced more than 100 top pros and amateurs from the state will compete in the annual Swiss Cheese Open at the Monroe course. Play begins at 9 a.m. with cash prizes for pros and merchandise awards for amateurs. Each golfer receives a pound of Swiss cheese.

PSC Denies Milwaukee Road Requests at Albany

The Wisconsin Public Service Commission denied Milwaukee Road’s plan to discontinue agency and less than carload freight service at Albany. It allowed part time operation of the Albany station and also authorized abandoning Fisk station in Winnebago County. The commission ordered added protection at a Merrill railroad crossing and closed state Highway 26 to heavy traffic on a segment near Janesville and downtown.

Monroe to Get Third Funeral Home

Dwight L. Newcomer and son Richard plan a new funeral home at 13th street and 3rd avenue Monroe on land purchased from Theodore Altmann. The facility includes a 350 seat air conditioned chapel, 40 by 24 foot, with living quarters for the Newcomers and a large parking area. The project also extends the family’s three funeral homes with Thomas operating the Silverthorn Newcomer home in Orfordville.

Henry Grundahl of Mt. Horeb Dies at 78

Henry Grundahl aged 78 of Mt. Horeb died yesterday at his home. He was a retired farmer from the Daleyville area born in 1881 in Valders Norway. Survived by his wife Marit Breiseth two sons Amos Janesville Milo Mr Horeb three daughters Mrs Carl Larsen Wittenburg Ill Mrs John Soma Glen Ellen Ill and Mrs Ray Lund Cedar Rapids Ia with 19 grandchildren. City County Officials To Tour Hot-Mix Plant

Monroe and Green County leaders are invited to a 10:30 a.m. Tuesday tour beginning at the county Courthouse. They will view a $250,000 hot-mix plant east of the city and hear Rein Schultz and Dahl Inc explain paving operations on Highway 11. A lunch at the Swiss Wheel will precede a program by Edward J. Konkol.

Wisconsin Highway Toll Rises to 302 with Merrill Death

The 1959 Wisconsin highway fatality total reached 302 after a man was killed near Merrill and a woman died of injuries eight days earlier. The year ago total for this date was 313 fatalities.

Park Program To Start Monday With Track Meet Next

Miniature Ringling Brothers Circus Opens June Display

A 44 by 10 foot miniature Ringling Brothers Circus, built by Monroe native John Zweifel, premieres at Circus World Museum in Baraboo starting July 1. The 15 000-piece replica, scaled at one-half inch to a foot, includes the Big Top, acts, wagons, and detailed costumes handmade by Zweifel and his grandmother.

Four new Alice in Dairyland princesses will be named at Janesville today with one to be crowned in August. Judging of 20 candidates from 10 state regions started yesterday and continues today. Truck Driver Robert Kuster Injured In Rollover

Robert J. Kuster, 38, of 622 16th Avenue, was treated for back injuries at Monroe Clinic after the bread truck he drove rolled over at 8:15 a.m. on Highway 81 near the Junction House. He was released after treatment. Deputies cited a broken steering mechanism as the cause. Heavy truck damage, breach undamaged.

Fire Devastates Swank Breezy Point Lodge Trapping Guests

Rapidly spreading blaze gutted the main log lodge on Pelican Lake Brainerd Minnesota killing Mr and Mrs Frank Hillender of Cleveland and injuring more than 20 others as guests leaped from windows and bedsheets. Firefighters flooded the lake to halt spread. explosions from gas containers and shotgun shells added to the chaos. About 300 people were at the resort for a Minnesota Poultry Butter Egg Association convention and vacations.

Cyclists Warned by Police Over Traffic Violations

Henry S. Hefty, chief of police, warned cyclists their bicycles will be confiscated for traffic rule violations. Hefty cited numerous complaints of cyclists ignoring stops signs, riding on sidewalks in business districts, riding double, and riding the wrong way on one way streets, with confiscation for serious offenses.

National Debt Ceiling Bill Passed by House

The House backed a debt ceiling increase to 295 billion dollars in a 255 to 117 vote, its sixth time under President Eisenhower. The bill awaits Senate action where further opposition is expected before final passage.
