Madison veteran Hinrichs, after 22 years on the Capital Times sports staff, is named sports editor succeeding Harry Golden who will stay on staff. New duties emphasize stronger local coverage and continued newsroom leadership.
Nixon and Brezhnev witnessed the signing of four bilateral agreements on transportation oceanographics agriculture and cultural exchanges at the State Department. They then pursued trade discussions as the Senate Watergate Committee scheduled further hearings for next week. Brezhnev invited committee members to lunch at Blair House amid legislative concerns on trade.
The six member budget conference committee asked for more time to resolve Senate Assembly differences in the 1973 to 1975 state budget. They debated welfare tax relief and school aid as part of Lucey’s $2.7 billion package with about $2 billion in general revenue items awaiting action. Republican Sen. Walter Hollander and Dem Rep. Lloyd Siedschlag announced that Burnell R. Smith of Port Byron Illinois, 35, signed a contract to become Monroe School District's new superintendent. Smith, previously Riverdale School District's chief, succeeds Lee Olsen who left to pursue a PhD. He holds a PhD from the University of Iowa and has led a 1636 student K twelve district in Iowa. He and his wife Sharon have two daughters and are active in community groups. He emphasizes budget transparency and district community ownership of schools. The Port Byron district runs its own bus fleet and traveled 294000 miles last year. he also oversaw a 1500000 dollar Marion building program.
The Monroe area Civil Defense will test warning sirens Wednesday at noon. Tests occur twice monthly on the first and third Wednesdays during the summer peak tornado danger. The first siren signals an approaching tornado or severe storm for three minutes, followed by a three-minute wail for enemy attack.
AP reports Dean is expected to swear Nixon knew of the Watergate cover up. Senate hearings paused during Brezhnev’s U S visit. Anderson says Dean used 4000 for his honeymoon from Nixon funds. Cox weighs if a president can be subpoenaed or indicted. Nixon_Dean logs show one substantive meeting after Dean cleared staff. Mrs. Charles Howden of Rt. 1 New Glarus is announced as the second week winner for Browned Butter Pie. First week winner was Miss Margaret Cousin of Monroe with Dairyland Cheese Pie. The final week proceeds, three more semi finalists named, winners to be honored at Dairy Day Browntown June 30 and compete in District Bake Off on Channel 3 Madison in August.
