Algiers reports a predawn coup toppled President Ben Bella as a revolutionary council led by Col. Houari Boumedienne seized power. Boumedienne, 40, declared Ben Bella treason and promised Algeria would honor existing commitments. The move drew varied foreign reactions and army deployments around key sites.
Paris reports that the planned talks today between American astronauts Edward H. White II and James A. McDivitt and cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin were called off because Gagarin was too busy.
Mrs. Permin Graber of Monticello won first place in the Green County Dairy Bread Recipe Contest. She will receive a $3 prize and bake at the County Bake-Off at Wisconsin Power and Light Co. kitchen. The county winner advances to the Southwest District Bake-Off in October.

Robert Smith, manager of the community action program, conferred with officials and said funds would be released soon.
Gladewater Texas spectators were hit by bird shot when a clown fired what should have been blanks. Investigators call it an accident and say a live shell entered the gun. Twenty four people were wounded with no serious injuries. The clown was identified as Ken Arthur Boen, 41, of Fort Smith Arkansas.
APPLETON The United Church of Christ urged state officials and legislators to oppose any move to permit a sweepstakes lottery or legalized bingo in Wisconsin. The conference resolution says legalized gambling has served no useful social purpose and has detrimental effects on communities.
Jordan Township farmer Earl W. Easter 54 died after a tractor tipped over when its rear wheel struck a fallen tree. Coroner said crushing injuries accidental and no inquest. Survived by three sisters. funeral at Argle Methodist Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery Monroe.
O. L. Doug Hare said construction will start next week on a new all steel Green County Fast Freight building measuring 134 by 70 feet with added office space. The one story structure will feature two inch insulation and rise on a new site on 5th Ave south of 10th St, replacing the pre tornado highway 11 location that lost most of its offices.
Arlo Brown, 23, of Lena Newfoundland and Labrador, suffered the loss of part of his right foot last night while operating a hay baler on his farm. He was taken to a local clinic for treatment.
Lay personnel form a guidance network as Green County pares a master plan. A meeting at the Agricultural Building reviewed seven report areas coordinated by the county resources and development committee with mayor Walter R. Ekum outlining the city plan. Subcommittees named include Social and Cultural Life and Agriculture, with Myron E. Jeglum coordinating progress and plans for Dairy Day on June 26 at Belleville.
