Grace Lutheran to Dedicate Christian Education Building

Grace Lutheran church will dedicate and lay the corner stone for its Christian Education building Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Dr. K. E. Irvin of Freeport will deliver the sermon Let It Shine. An organ recital starts at 2 p.m. with cadet organists Philip Peterson and Jennifer Ruda. The dedication includes music, officials, and open house with dessert tea following. The 50 by 100 foot addition adds nursery through lower junior classes and a new church office, with remodeling of the existing church and basement.

Rains Ignored By 32nd Troops Field Exercise

Wisconsin’s 32nd National Guard Division launched a major command post drill at summer encampment, largest since Ft. Lewis duty, involving about 5,000 men and officers. Brig. Gen. Donald P Radde said the scope was unprecedented, with a 10 percent boost in field rations for the training session.

Monroe Queen candidates named from area contest

The top four Monroe dairy queen candidates are Jane Huffman Kay Lindsay Jane Phillips and Mary Jo Wedesky chosen by chairman John Hirsch. A 8 p.m. Tuesday formal judging at the agriculture building will rank finalists. Other communities announce schedules for queen selections with events in Albany Brodhead and Decatur area.

Aberdeen health officer Dr Ian MacQueen announced the typhoid epidemic is contained with no new sources of infection. While 447 people remain under treatment, the city lifted its quarantine and only one death was recorded amid a modern antibiotics era.

Calvert Seeks Assembly Seat in Green-Lafayette District

Walter J. Calvert, Republican from Benton, announces candidacy for re election to the Wisconsin Assembly in the new Green Lafayette County district. A Lafayette farmer and former teacher, he has served since 1955, five terms, and led the education committee for five terms. He attends the Mid Western Conference on Higher Education and the St Paul conference, and chairs the GOP Platform Committee at the Milwaukee convention. He is married with four children.

Two Illinois Men Die In Jackson County Crash

Two men died in a fiery station wagon crash three and one half miles north of Hixon on Highway 27 in Jackson County. Joseph R. Covall aged 25 of Dundee Tennessee and an older man believed to be his father were killed. The Wisconsin 1964 highway toll rose to 426 on this date above last year.

Kiwanis Prize Cars Loaned For Test Drives

Twenty five Kiwanis members at noon meeting in the Swiss Wheel won surprise prizes, receiving 1964 automobiles loaned for a week through Ford Motor Co. VIP Loan Program. Lee Geiger of Monroe Sales Co. presented keys, with full fuel, insurance, and return due at next Thursday's Kiwanis luncheon. Vehicles were staged in the Swiss Wheel lot during lunch.

Goldwater Vote Figure Now 677, 361 'Committed'

The Associated Press reports Barry Goldwater holds 677 first ballot votes, with 361 bound delegates and 316 unbound or pledged supporters. State and district actions add 243 delegates from GOP conventions plus 118 from binding primaries, while 14 Montana delegates may still tilt toward Goldwater. Governor Scranton staunchly supports the late push for the nomination and critiques Goldwater’s public presence.

Badger Boys State Nominates Gov Candidate Marth and Sleik

Ripon David Marth of Wausau and Thomas Sleik of La Crosse were chosen as governor nominees for Badger Boys State on Wednesday. Marth, 17, defeated John Landa 125 to 99 on the Federalist ticket. Sleik, 17, edged Warren Carriveau 69 to 2 for the Nationalist nomination. Marth previously won the American Legion national oratorical contest earlier this year. Soccer fans erupt in Athens after a 1-1 tie between Greece's top teams, clashing with police and damaging nets and dressing rooms.

Water System Upgrades At Green County Fairgrounds

Changes to the Green County Fairgrounds water system prepare for the 110th Green County Fair July 29 to Aug 2. A new main line on 9th Street serves upper barns and provides wash rack pressure. a second line serves the stock pavilion. Fences and amphitheater seating are painted and renumbered. A concrete slab for the tractor-pulling contest is planned. Monroe Ready-Mix will pour it. A new 60 by 120 foot Morton building will house the 4-H dairy barn. Race horses are at Michigan tracks. William Sacker is not training this year. Premium books distribute July 1.

Substitution Secures Path to Civil Rights Bill Final Vote

Senate moves toward final approval after 81 days of debate with a 76 to 18 substitution vote on a bipartisan package. The measure retains anti discrimination provisions and boosts voluntary compliance while allowing states with existing laws to handle complaints before federal action. If passed this week, the House will likely adopt the Senate version before July 2 adjournment. Goldwater’s voting record on the substitute is noted. Tower opposed the substitution.

Merrill Pastor May Come Here

Rev. Calvin Paul Fischer of Merrill is a candidate for pastor at St John's United Church of Christ Monroe. A congregational meeting will be held Sunday July 5 to select a senior pastor to succeed Rev. Paul Olm. Fischer will preach at 9 and 10 30 am services and vote will follow after both services. Fischer, 35, is a Defiance Ohio native and a 1946 Manitouoc Lincoln High School graduate. He attended Elmhurst College and McCormick Theological Seminary, was ordained May 1953, and previously pastored Belvidere Illinois from 1953 to 1956.

Prince Edward Faces Deadline To Reopen Schools

US District Judge Oren R. Lewis ordered Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors to levy taxes and raise funds within one week to reopen and operate public schools closed since 1959 to avoid desegregation. Duluth Fire Chief and Infant Die in Duplex Blaze

Assistant Duluth fire chief David Maling, 48, entered a burning two family home to rescue infant Gretchen Jackson, month-old daughter of Henry and Mrs. Jackson, but collapsed and died. The baby was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Elevator Rider Slain by Robber

Leonard Simpson a 63 year old New York lawyer was shot in the heart in his building as an elevator carried him to the lobby after Selma Simpson and others waited. Police described a tall gaunt man with a mustache who came down stairs waved and left. The victim’s wallet watch tie clasp and pen were found with about one dollar in change.
