Girl Scout Day Camp Opens At Kiwanis Site Near Monroe

The first week of the annual Girl Scout Day Camp starts with 83 Cadette Junior and Brownie girls at Kiwanis Youth Camp west of Monroe. Rain plans reroute to Fellowship Hall St John s UCC. Cadettes canoeing at Lake Francis and Zander s Lake with tests and lessons.

Lundgren Award Given to Elizabeth Stuessy for Nursing Grant

Elizabeth Stuessy has been named recipient of the Albert T. Lundgren nursing scholarship, a $350 grant renewable next year. She is a Monroe High School 1968 graduate and was named Monroe’s Career Girl of 1968. Stuessy studied at Eau Claire State University and is enrolled at Madison General Hospital, with a record of active school involvement and service in clubs and student exchanges.

Green County Delegates Named for 4-H Club Congress at Madison

Green County 4-H has named 10 delegates to the 49th Annual 4-H Club Congress at Madison with a group including Ben Ackerman Valerie DeVoe Mary Motz Monroe Kenneth Schlapbach Susan Durtschi Albany Kathy Meier Juda Ilene Schlappi Vicki Soddy Browntown Cindy Streiff New Glarus David Heisohn Brooklyn Three members also selected for the 4-H Band and Chorus Kathy Zimmerli Cindi Mauermann Decatur and Nadean Streiff New Glarus Jody Wegmueller will join the State Speaking Contest along with Mrs Ernest Wegmueller the adult leader They depart today for a June 17 20 Wisconsin State 4-H Congress on the UW campus with theme Dialogue in Democracy The event will include workshops speeches and awards from Gov Warren Knowles UW speakers and 4-H music and drama activities The day also hosts dances social events and a talent night

Albany resident Hanson from Blanchardville shares a maiden name with her own, posing a note on family records. The Hansons have four children Larry Ann Barbara Bruce, ages 17 to 13, all attending Albany schools. Mrs Hanson handles bookkeeping and dispatching and belongs to the Eastern Star.

Troop Spotlight at Monroe Kiwanis Luncheon

Richard H. Bahr will present the Boy Scout program at the Kiwanis Club of Monroe luncheon on Thursday June 19 at the VFW Club. The club receives recognition from U S Grant Council for sponsoring Troop 101 for 45 years, the council’s longest running sponsorship. An inter club golf match with Madison East follows, including a tour of the Oscar Mayer plant and lunch.

Teen Canteen Displays Grim Smoking Education Cancer Room

In Johnstown Pennsylvania the Teen Canteen of Greater Johnstown shows a stark smoking education display called the Cancer Room Its center feature is a wooden coffin filled with sand and cigarette butts while X ray images of lungs hang on black walls The room uses gray drapes and blue lighting to convey its message about smoking dangers

River Excursions Opens Twin Paddle Wheeler Lady M Service

River Excursions in East Dubuque operates the Lady M on the Mississippi from Chestnut Mountain Lodge Dock to Galena Ferry Landing. Regular one and two hour trips start at 11 a.m. daily through Labor Day and weekends through October. Lady M seats 150 and can be chartered for private groups with Capt. Hartney narrating river lore. Also active are Dubuque II at Dubuque and Lady D at Hannibal Missouri.

Barn Meeting Set June 24 At Green County Farm

Remains of union leader John L. Lewis buried in Springfield

The remains of John L. Lewis were laid to rest early today at Oakridge Cemetery Springfield next to his wife with only family present. Lewis head of the United Mine Workers for about 40 years died June 11 in Washington at age 89.
