Ronald D. Johnson, Monroe park and recreation director, outlines a plan for Gen. Nathan F. Twining Park on the north edge of Monroe Wisconsin. The new recreation area is under development and featured in Park Maintenance.
Monroe officials faced a shortage of park and recreation space as population rises. The study urged acquiring 60 acres to meet standards, leading to a 43 acre land purchase from the American Legion in 1957 for 19000 dollars after extensive planning and negotiations.
In Houghton Michigan a North Central Airlines pilot and stewardess vanished after a fishing trip on Big Portage Lake. Captain Robert Barkley, 34, of Chicago, and Toni Crimo uch, 23, of Galesburg, Illinois, took a small boat from the shore and were caught in a squall. The overturned craft was recovered hours later on the lake’s far side.
Chicago meat packing wanes as Swift and Co and Armour Co halt slaughtering, joining Wilson and Co in ceasing operations. The 75 year old firms depart due to obsolete facilities while about 25 remaining packers and 50 buyers keep Chicago as a livestock market hub with continued purchasing by Swift and Armour.
The Monroe City Band will give a good will concert in Brooklyn on Monday at 8 p.m. on Main Street. Harman J. Ellis, a former mayor, is honored for his long service with the band founded in 1949. Allan F. Barnard directs with soloists William Rollins Beverly Flaherty and Beverly Koehn.
Arthur Northwick age 50 of Belleville died at 10 05 am today at St Clare hospital where he had been a medical patient the past week Survivors include his wife Becker funeral home Belleville is in charge of arrangements
Nation al Guard unit from Green County begins a 15 day maneuver with the 32nd Red Arrow Division at Camp McCoy. Ninety men travel in convoy for noon arrival and weekend organizational work with planned firing range and training activities.
Funeral services for Jacob D. Hahlen 66 killed in a two car crash near Tomah will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Shrin er Neushwander funeral home with Rev Paul H Olm officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery Brodhead. Hahlen a retired Decatur Township farmer and former Brodhead resident had lived in Monroe the past three years. Friends may call at the funeral home afternoon tomorrow. Also injured in the crash were I R Kittleson 77 and Edwin P Haberman 70 of Monroe. Five other men in the same car as Lyle Mose Goff 46 Tomah were injured. Kittleson improved but still serious Haberman in pain but no bones broken. Both Mmes Kittleson and Haberman are there with their husbands.
Michial D. Krueger a six year old son of Mrs. Alice Krueger 2215 14th street was treated for a cerebral contusion at St. Clare hospital yesterday after a car driven by Herbert O. Mohns Route 2 Brodhead struck on 13th street in the 2000 block Minor damage to two cars William W. Erb Monticello and Peter O. Johnson 1630 23rd avenue in a mishap this morning in front of Bowmans Dairy near the overhead pass on Highway 69 Yesterday considerable damage to cars driven by Lucille L. Meyer 1707 12th street and Helen E. Zimmerli Route 1 Albany when they collided on 17th avenue in the 1100 block
Formation of the Wisconsin Cheese Foundation Inc was announced to promote and advertise Wisconsin cheese. Temporary officers were elected: Harry J. Laack president Ronald Johnson vice president Ewald Jung secretary and Elmer Beery treasurer. Cheese plants will be asked to support the advertising program at retail levels.
Gov. Gaylord Nelson saw two major bills clear the Assembly including a 6.9 million dollar appropriation to raise salaries for 23,000 state workers and creation of a new Planning Department. The measures, approved 70 to 12, head to a Republican Senate opposed to the Conservation Commission reorganization.
A 90 year old Platteville woman, Mrs. Minny Clare, died when a collision involving her son’s car occurred. Her son Edward Eggers, 68, his wife Edith Eggers, and others were hospitalized. The toll rose to 284 for Wisconsin highways. A second accident near Fond du Lac injured five, including Chicago residents Walter Abrahams and Agnes Van Sicle.
Citizens of Neumagen in Rhine land Palatinate promise 220 gallons of moselle wine to the Big Four foreign ministers if they reach an agreement at Geneva. The wine claim reflects local belief that moselle stimulates international affairs.
The Queen conferred royal honors on about 2100 people during her official birthday celebrations. Notables include actor Michael Redgrave painter Stanley Spencer and composers Michael Tippett and Geraint Evans. Mrs E Pritchard 91 leads a thrift group. J A J Gough and others receive British Empire medals.
In Tallahassee a defense witness, Pearlie Collinsworth, testifies that Willion Collinsworth was intoxicated and mentally unable to distinguish right from wrong when alleged rape occurred. The four white defendants, including Collinsworth, face trial with details of coercion disputed by the defense.
President Eisenhower arrived by helicopter at his Gettysburg farm as rain threatened to force cancellation of his 18 hole golf outing.
American officials foresee a Soviet propaganda push accusing the West of Berlin talks failure. A U.S. plan favors a possible recess or postponement, with progress needed for a heads of government meeting. The British seek interim steps while Khrushchev is pressed for concessions.
Glenn C. Langston district baseball commissioner announced the annual meet will be held in Shullsburg this summer replacing Monroe due to organizational issues. Likely entrants include Shullsburg Platteville Kewaunee Muscoda Wyalusing State Park Pecatonica Bears Hazel Green and Boscobel. The tournament opens July 14 in Shullsburg with the winner advancing to the Milwaukee state tournament on August 3.
Soviet Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan says Soviet scientists will launch additional earth satellites to replace Sputnik II which is expected to fall from orbit next fall. He insists the skies will not be left empty.
