Massachusetts teacher suspended over draft card debate

Sheila McNabb and her seventh grade class in Somerville sparked a controversy when a teacher Mrs. Sobel commented on a Vietnam War essay asking if the death of a brother was worth it. The school suspended Sobel with pay pending a hearing, while Mayor Brennan urged her firing.

Illinois House OKs gas tax hike and bonds for highways

The Illinois House approved a one cent gas tax increase a highway bond issue totaling 2 billion and higher vehicle license fees. The package aims to fund accelerated highway construction though critics say urban roads gain little. Proponents cite modernization of 5000 miles of roads and 1599 miles of freeways as top priorities.

Deininger Speaker as Commencement Honors Noted

Citizenship awards went to Mary Usher and John Deininger at Monroe Senior High School graduation. Six top ten percent students received honor scholarships from $100 to $800. Usher, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Usher, is on the annual staff and active in Badger Girls State. Deininger is son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Deininger.

Bloodmobile at Turner Hall Monroe June 17 140 pint quota

The Badger Red Cross Bloodmobile visits Turner Hall Monroe on Tuesday June 17 from 4 30 p m to raise Monroe’s 140 pint goal. County Board Unit Meets on Tuesday

Green County Board of Supervisors will convene on Tuesday, June 10 at 8 p.m. in the Court House for their regular monthly meeting. Agenda items include vocational school tuition costs of 9 270.04 dollars and Common School aid payments of 7 524.05 to Lafayette and Dane counties, with annual grave care charges of 2.50 or 3 dollars, plus other resolutions from other counties. Meetings are open to the public.

Wells Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in Air Force Reserve

George L. Wells of Monroe is promoted to lieutenant colonel in the U S Air Force Reserve. A WWII and Korea veteran, he is Air Force Academy liaison for southwestern Wisconsin, owner of the Chocolate Shop, and husband of Marlyn Disch. He will attend a reception at St Johns Military Academy in Delafield on June 14 and 15 with Wisconsin appointees to the Air Force Academy.

Soldier Suffers Surgical Setback

ALBANY Times Special reports Pfc. Kris Blumer aged 19, wounded in action in Vietnam on May 15, had a surgical setback on June 2 and remains in critical condition. His mother, Mrs. Virginia Blumer, cites a Red Cross letter noting he was better and hopes for evacuation to Japan then the United States. His brother Karl, from Ft. Knox, is en route on leave. he is visiting Judy Lepsey near Chicago before Albany.

Air Force shoots down DC6 aiding Biafra amid red cross loss claim

In Lagos the air force said a DC6 delivering supplies to Biafra was shot down. Swedish Red Cross aircraft with four aboard reportedly disappeared after being hit over Biafra. In Saigon the fighting intensified with multiple bases hit and hundreds killed. Americans injured or killed reported.
