Supreme Court curbs presidential power in steel seizure ruling
The Supreme Court ruled that President Truman exceeded his powers by seizing the steel industry to avert a strike, reaffirming that Congress, not the President, holds lawmaking authority. Justices Black, Vinson, Reed, and Minton dissented on the emergency question, while the majority underscored constitutional limits on executive power. The decision signals a potential shift against expanding executive authority and sets the stage for the steelworkers’ response to the ruling.

Congress Trims Foreign Aid In Mock Arithmetic
Washington observers note Congress treats foreign aid like a math exercise. The Truman administration sought 7.9 billion dollars, committees suggested about one billion more, while the House trimmed to 6.163 billion. The Senate rejected several top-off proposals before approving a 200 million cut. Senator Long led the final tally, highlighting the puzzling logic of large cuts.
