Junior high students received scholastic awards, band honors and various attendance, sports, and Teen Times recognitions during an afternoon ceremony. Cadet and Junior Band rehearsals were announced for Wednesdays in June and July at the school.

Two Monroe Teens Injured In City Crash

Two 15 year old Monroe girls were treated at Monroe Clinic for injuries after a two car crash at the 17th avenue and 12th street intersection. Mary Condon suffered facial cuts and a bruised knee while Phyllis Mohns had a severely bruised knee cap and bruises to the left hand and leg. Edgar A. Anderson of 906 10th street drove the car carrying the teens. Alma Tollkson of rural Argyle drove the other vehicle. Considerable damage occurred to both cars.

Kennedy Heads For Mr. K Talks

In Paris President Kennedy and President De Gaulle wrap three days of talks with a communique signaling basic agreement on duties toward West Berlin. Kennedy says discussions give him confidence for Vienna talks with Khrushchev and notes Western powers will not modify rights in West Berlin by force. Berlin is a forthcoming Khrushchev topic.

Official Explains Temporary Odor in Monroe

Rex N. Eyler chairman of the Board of Public Works says the Western Monroe odor comes from material stored in the lagoon not the sewage plant. He notes cleaned material dried in the lagoon and limed daily, but warm weather reduces effectiveness. Eyler calls the situation temporary and emphasizes the plant is operating properly. He says residents in the western section reported several complaints in recent days.

Susan Grace Grundahl daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence S Grundahl was named valedictorian of Monroe High School Class of 1961 during commencement in the gymnasium. Co salutatorians were Roger H Bruny and Jean Marie Rutsch. citizenship awards went to Karl Arthur Drye and Mary Ellen Summeril. Dr Glenn S Pound guest speaker urged hard work, self reliance, preparation, and moral discipline, stressing penalties for rule violations.

Federal judge orders halt to Freedom Riders tests in Alabama

A federal judge in Montgomery, Frank M. Johnson Jr., ordered four Freedom Riders organizations to stop their tests of racial barriers in Alabama. He also issued a sweeping no violence order against Montgomery police, the Ku Klux Klan, and four individuals and threatened jail for leaders if riot breaks out. The injunction requires police protection for interstate travelers and maintains prior no‑violence orders against Klan factions and individuals.

Petitions Trigger Origin-Destination Study of City Highways

The State Highway Commission will start an origin-destination traffic study next Tuesday to assess whether Monroe’s main routes carry mainly local traffic or through traffic. About 1,100 petitions supported rerouting plans, with roadside interview stations set on routes in and out of the city through June 21.

Dr Henry Scott of the University of Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation is named the featured speaker for the Swiss Daily Festival Weekend Queens Banquet at Turner Hall Friday night June 23 at 7 p.m. Banquet chairman Ray E. Mrs Kuhn Killed in Michigan City Crash En Route to Wisconsin

Mrs. Robert H Kuhn 31 of Columbus Ohio and former Monroe resident Sally Ransdell died when her car crashed through a highway guardrail near Michigan City Indiana after a tire blowout. Her daughters Cecelie 3 and Tracy 5 were injured with Cecelie in critical condition. Services pending at Leach and Son funeral home Columbus.

Jimmy Fund Receives $100 From Shrine

A Green County Shrine Club added another 100 to the Jimmy Robertson fund to aid medical expenses for Jimmy son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Robertson. Jimmy underwent his third intestinal surgery May 24 at St. Clare hospital and remains listed in good condition despite a cold. The fund has surpassed 1100 with a 500 contribution from the Green County Chapter of the National Foundation amid broad local support.
