Atom Arsenal Grows Rapidly Congress Hears

The Atomic Energy Commission told Congress the U S atomic arsenal is growing rapidly in total numbers and that there has been record uranium production at domestic sources. It reported progress on Savannah River plant components and reactors for industrial power, naval propulsion, and military needs.

Farmer Slayers Plead Guilty in Iowa Slaying Case

Two men William G Karston and Almer M Anderson pled guilty to informations charging them with the holdup slaying of Wendall W Jones, 56, at his farm home near Plaski. District Judge H C Taylor set Tuesday for a hearing to determine degree of murder for sentencing. Court-appointed attorney Russell Swartz represented the defendants. The crime ended a 39 hour manhunt across three states after the $81 robbery.

Fair Talent Night Set for Wednesday at Green County Fair

Lesner ruber county club leader expects 15 to 17 units in this year's talent night at the Green County Centennial Fair. The program runs before the grandstand Wednesday night with no admission to the amphitheater. A rehearsal is tonight at 8 in the library green room. No prizes for winners. The board contest is Friday August 6 at 11 am, with parade rides at 12:30 pm. Beards entered for the contest earn a season pass.

Winners Named For 4H Program At County Fair

The county extension office announced the Demonstration Day winners with six blue ribbons in home economics and seven blue in agriculture. Notable honorees include Lorene Eickelkraut of New Glarus for Made To Order Sandwiches and several 4-H and FFA members from New Glarus, Spring Grove, Clarno, Adams, and Monroe. Judging results to be released tomorrow as a state fair recommendation was noted for the top entry.

Borden to shut Browntown powdered milk plant Aug 31

The Browntown plant will close August 31 due to foreign market losses and a large domestic surplus of powdered milk. The Chicago headquarters cited export declines and intensified competition abroad as reasons. The Browntown facility, opened in 1925, has long served as the town’s main industry and was a major wartime supplier. current manager Gerald E. Swiggum has led since 1952.

Dangerous convict flees in twine truck near Stillwater

Stillwater prison inmate Harrison E. Mathews termed dangerous escaped outside the walls late Thursday in a truck loaded with twine. He is set to turn 25 Sunday, has served 3 years of a 5 to 4 year term for first degree robbery. Home is at Bena, Minnesota. A 17 year old Gilbert Nytes of Sheboygan Falls drowned Thursday in Lake Elien near Sheboygan.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus will not perform in Wisconsin this year. Nat Green, Chicago office manager, says Milwaukee is skipped for the second time in 30 years. Madison report states 19 year old Sun Prairie farm youth David L. Anderson was killed when his car collided with a truck on U S Highway 151 just outside Madison today.
