Wisconsin Storm Brings Tornado and 100 mph Winds
A wild summer storm swept southeast through Wisconsin with a tornado, damaging hail and 70 to 100 mph winds. The Houston area in St. Croix County felt the tornado while Eau Claire suffered heavy hail and roof and window damage. A barn fire started by lightning burned a Fall Creek farm and a heifer died. Camp Douglas reported a 72 mph gust that reached 100 mph, with antennas and trailers damaged. The deputy and police noted hail as large as baseballs and widespread property harm across multiple counties.

Ranger 7 Near Moon Target After Midcourse Burn
Ranger 7, a camera-carrying 806 pound spacecraft, is on course toward a 200 mile wide target plain near the moon’s equator. NASA reported the craft at 9 am Monroe time was 114,208 miles from Earth, moving 3,652 mph relative to Earth and 130,952 miles from the moon, closing at 3,219 mph. The 50 second kick slowed it from 4,000 mph to align with the landing area.

Stauffacher Duo Named Outstanding PMA Dairy Couple
Roger A. Stauffacher and wife of Monroe were chosen as the 1964 Outstanding Dairy Couple for PMA District 20. The district covers parts of northwestern Illinois and southwestern Wisconsin with about 900 dairy farmers, while PMA as a whole counts nearly 12,000 members. The couple will compete against 17 districts for the national title in ChicagoAugust 17–18, and the winner plus runner up receive all expenses paid trips to the National Milk Producers Federation convention in Las Vegas December 6–10. Stauffacher, 26, farms 200 acres and owns half of a herd of 80 registered Holsteins. active in PMA since 1961 and Holstein groups since 1963. He has chaired the state Black and White Show in Green County and served on the Homestead Club board since 1963.
