National Guard convoys head home from Camp Ripley

Wisconsin 32nd National Guard Division will move 25 convoys with over 1300 vehicles from Camp Ripley Minnesota, routing through 64 Wisconsin communities on Friday and Saturday. Lt Col Santimays said convoys will be monitored by military police from Eau Claire to Hudson, with civilian drivers urged to use alternate routes to ease traffic and maintain 45 mph speeds to prevent incidents.

Sunday Will Be Day for Prayer and Race Riots Probe

President Johnson proclaimed Sunday a national day of prayer for racial peace and formed an 11 member commission to search out causes of race riots and to suggest future remedies. He condemned Detroit violence as crime and urged swift, certain action under law. In New York, stocks edged up modestly despite pre week end profit taking.

Green County Fair Highlights At Monroe

The Green County Fair features reserved seats for Saturday and Sunday harness races at the amphitheater ticket office for 1.50. Ernest Hayes notes good seats remain. The fair showcases state exhibitors, student workers, Jaycees fundraising stands, Ten exchange students from Brazil visit with UW Madison ties. Nursing Education Christine Mueller Wins 1957 Grant

Christine Mueller 18 daughter of Walter and Mrs Mueller Monticello won the Green County Voiture 40 or 8 nursing scholarship of $500 announced by Howard Schulz. A 1967 Monticello High School graduate she will study pre nursing at Platteville State University then train at Mercy Hospital Janesville. She is active in band chorus forensics church and summer work at Casino. The award will be presented Aug 9 at Idle Hour Mansion.

Cheese Winners Highlight Green County Fair Exhibits

The 113th Green County Fair saw cheese judges name six first place winners including Arnold Zumkehr Pleasant Valley Monroe for Wheel Swiss and Leo Willi Darlington for Black Swiss. Winners ranged across Brick Seeholzer Glen Kortman and others with scores from 91 to 97. Daily attendance exceeds last year with 4 804 paying adults and 832 children and a tractor pull crowd near 2 000.

Argyle former mayor Kelly La Vassor dies at 84

Clarence A. La Vassor 84 of Argyle longtime mayor for 29 years died yesterday at St. Clare Hospital after a brief illness. He helped organize Lafayette County REA and served on the school, fire, church and civic groups. Survived by son Walter Portage daughter Eleanor Pederson Argyle four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Burial Woodlawn Cemetery with funeral at Argyle Lutheran Church Monday at 2 p.m.

Juvenile Faces Shoplifting Charge In Monroe Area

Monroe police report a local merchant thwarted theft by a 10 year old. The juvenile has been released to parents and the case referred to juvenile authorities. The youth has prior similar incidents on record.
