Time magazine reports U2 flights and satellite surveillance at a daily high since the 1962 missile crisis. Six TU95 bomber flights to Havana since April likely reconnaissance or supply missions.
In New York the Dow Jones average rose to 737.54 at noon, up 2.46, as advances outpaced declines nearly 3 to 1 on the NYSE. Metals oils airlines and drugs led gains while most other sectors mixed. In Saigon the 16th Geneva anniversary saw Viet Minh forces strike in Cambodia and near the DMZ, including the first Saigon rocket attack in over two months.
Israeli air strikes hit Egyptian targets along the Suez Canal and guerrilla positions in Jordan and Lebanon. A military spokesman said all planes returned safely. A Syrian statement reported one Israeli Skyhawk was shot down over the Golan Heights, crashing in flames in Israeli-held territory.
Federal investigators probe the United Airlines Boeing 737 crash during takeoff at Philadelphia International Airport after a loss of power near 50 feet. The incident left 11 injured among 56 passengers and a crew of six, with three hospitalized. In Colombia, troops guard the Aug. 7 inauguration amid threats from ex-dictator’s supporters and martial law measures.
The Norwegian cruise ship Fulvia rescued all 721 aboard after a sea fire 100 miles north of the Canary Islands. The burned vessel sank at a depth of 2,000 fathoms after drifting within 35 miles of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Authorities report the ship went down at 28.57 N 16.30 W.
Green County records its 10th road death of the year as 17 year old Michael Dean Krueger of Route 1 Monroe dies after a collision with a car on County Trunk B near Highway 69. Six others travel to St. Clare Hospital with injuries and the driver Anita Currier and her family are treated. The same day 8 year old Terry Troy Ritschard dies in a farm accident at St. Clare Hospital after being run over by a farm feed mill wheel. Coroner rules both deaths accidental.
One year after Apollo 11, Armstrong and Aldrin’s moonwalk is described as a high point giving way to space program doubts. Nixon hails unity while NASA faces budget cuts, postponed flights, and possible further cancellations as Apollo 12, 13, and 14 unfold with mixed outcomes.
On the first anniversary of the moon walk the Apollo 11 crew Neil Armstrong Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins will view the heat scarred spacecraft Columbia in Jefferson City Missouri. They will later travel to New York to present moon rock and the UN flag to Secretary General U Thant.
Richard Nyman and his wife Darlene of Route 1 Orfordville win AMPI Sugar River district honors for leadership and dairy farming. Nyman, 34, runs a 160 acre farm with 108 registered Holsteins and ships milk to Borden Co. He holds multiple district and state roles and serves on the Orfordville school board. The couple and a runner up advance to Tri-State and National Milk Producers Federation events in Chicago and Las Vegas. They have five children and are active in church and local organizations.
Suzanne Olsen of the Clarke-Loras Singers returns home after the group won first place in the Youth Choir at the International Music Festival in Llangollen Wales and placed second in Folk Singing and Mixed Chorus. The 48-member choir toured through 25 cities in 35 days and earned over $600 in prizes.
Green County's Jody Wegmueller, Wisconsin's sole Philippines AFS participant, writes of arrival in Cabanatuan City on June 12 for an eleven week stay with the Edrozo family. She notes school July 13, daily rains, tricycles and jitneys as transport, language hurdles, local cuisine, and her hospital volunteer work with the Girl Scouts.
