SWCD Group Meets Honors Tour Forestry Program

Area 6 SWCD supervisors met Monday at the Decatur Lake Country Club with tours of a tree plantation and a nursery. Honorees included Merlyn Rufer for outstanding service and Russell Wolf for best long term forest management. others recognized were Stan Lesar David Ladd and William Calvert. Russell urged a Rock River basin study involving federal and state agencies.

Copper theft hits Argyle area kettles valued at $80

Sheriff deputies investigate thefts of two large copper cheese kettles in Green County near Argyle. Each kettle weighed 125 to 159 pounds and measured about 64 inches in diameter. Investigators link the two thefts and urge residents with information to contact authorities.

Girl Exits Critical After Madison Traffic Crash

Sherri L. Rosman, 18, of Brodhead remains in critical condition at Madison General Hospital after a Sunday motorcycle crash on Nakoma Road at the Beltline in Madison. Passenger was Peter G. Greisen, 21, who died in the same crash. Rosman is granddaughter of Kenneth Black of Monroe and Frank Rosman Sr. of Green Bay.

Monroe Civil Defense warns sirens still faulty tests delayed

City Civil Defense director Theodore Weiss says new warning sirens will be tested for two to three weeks more and may not yet issue take cover commands. A dealer manufacturer oversight caused the current issue with three warning zones air raid alert and fire signals. Future tests will include firm and federal Civil Defense representatives to check sound coverage and consider additional sirens under federal matching funds.

City School Levy Forecast To Increase Despite Valuation Rise

Monroe voters are asked to approve a district tax levy about $50,000 higher than last year as the new budget totals $1,621,599 up from $1,496,032. City valuation growth may offset the rate, with a meeting set for Monday July 25 at 7 30 p m to discuss property purchases pool plans and hiring more teachers.

Two Autos Recovered in Monroe Thefts

Monroe police report two cars stolen in the past nine months have been recovered. A 1965 model stolen from 1100 block of 16th Ave on Nov 26, 1965 was found June 23, 1966 and owned by William L. Carter. A 1962 car stolen June 13, 1966 from Ralph B. Strasser’s curb was found three days later in Freeport. evidence aided an arrest of 18 year old Donald B. Stevenson awaiting sentence in Green County court. A 17 year old is also wanted. The missing Carter vehicle was located after a National Automotive Theft Bureau alert.

Green County Fair opens July 27 with entries due, events listed

The 112th Green County Fair starts Wednesday July 27 ending Sunday July 31. Open class entries accepted until 5 p.m. Saturday at the administration office. Cheese judging begins July 28, all entries due by July 25. Highlights include Mickey Stark shows, tractor pulling, a Green County 4-H Horse Show, harness races, Grand Ole Opry style acts, and Hurricane Hell Drivers.

Brugger Hits Mark Bloodmobile Collects 70 Pints

Roger Brugger reached the three gallon mark donating to the Red Cross Badger Bloodmobile yesterday in Monroe. A total of 70 pints were collected toward a 115 pint Monroe quota with 78 donors registered and eight rejected.

Monroe Forms Codes and Ordinances Housing Code Group

A new Codes and Ordinances Committee led by Milo F. Friedrichs will review Monroe city codes including electrical and plumbing rules and propose a housing code. Members Harv y D. The advisory panel will develop a housing code for city adoption as part of urban renewal and community improvement efforts.
