The Farm Editor notes July arrives with heat and humidity as hayfever fades and weddings drop off. A lighthearted column records a society desk wedding, a skunk family under an outhouse, ticks and mosquitoes, elm bark beetles, pheasants, lawn talk, and summer scenes around the 74 acre lake.
St. Clare Hospital reported 182 patients hospitalized, a fiscal year high, with 169 beds in rooms and others in halls or sun porch. Fourteen are babies, and occupancy exceeds typical levels as admissions outpace discharges. Some patients are turned away or sent to other facilities.
The Babler family Ralph and Mrs Babler joined by Tom Carl and Patricia completed an 11 day 3000 mile motor trip from Orangeville through Mackinac Bridge Sault Ste Marie Soo Locks Canada Expo 67 Montreal Quebec and Maine Holstein breeder stops including Brattleboro and Saginaw. Lorin Jordan joined the Kentucky Trek 10 days with Wisconsin youth fellowships. Sidewalk Art Fair in Madison gathers 355 artists from 69 Wisconsin cities and seven states. A Catholic boarding school for mentally retarded children will open in the former Sted Hospital Freeport under Rockford bishop Loras Lane.

Wegmueller sisters Barbara and Georgia led at the Wisconsin Brown Swiss Association Canton 2 Show at the Lafayette County Fair grounds in Darlington. Barbara won senior and champion showmanship. Georgia earned Canton 2 Queen and Barbara a Canton queen repeat. Linda Kramer of Platteville won junior showmanship. Judges tabbed Sugar Valley Farm and Voegeli Farm for grand and junior champions across various classes with many Blue ribbons awarded to multiple farms in Monroe, Brodhead, Monticello, Gratiot, and surrounding towns.
An unidentified Marinette County observer told the Wisconsin Agricultural Marketing Service that large mosquitoes are prevalent this year, noting one specimen yesterday with four woodticks on it. The agency monitors weather and crops through field staff across the state.
Rehearsals began July 10 for Johanna Spyri's Heidi to be staged at the grade school gym as part of the Heidi Festival. Performances run Aug 4 5 6 with an afternoon show Aug 5, featuring Beth Elmer as Heidi and a cast including Steve Disch Jon Barnard Lou Ann Wild and others.
Tiny daughter Winslow, born May 8 at St. Clare Hospital weighing under two pounds, survived after early isolation in hospital incubators. She grew to five pounds five ounces and was discharged to her home with sheriff department aid and an additional isolette from Madison Hospital.
Arthur Andrews of rural South Wayne will celebrate his 90th birthday anniversary tomorrow July 13 and his party is planned for Sunday July 16 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Saalsans farm home near South Wayne. Friends and relatives are invited and requested not to bring gifts.
The Sister Blandine group of Alcoholics Anonymous will hold an open meeting tomorrow, July 13, at 8 p.m. in the St. John's United Church of Christ meeting room at the 15th St. entrance. Dr. Egbert Kamstra of the Monroe Clinic will address the gathering.
District meeting on July 24 discusses a $102000 addition to Juda grade school to relieve overcrowding. About 95 residents attend in Juda High School gym. Plan: add five classrooms and shift grades to four rooms in high school to accommodate 38 to 41 students. Referendum expected late August if approved.
Green County Board of Supervisors decided to discontinue Green County Teachers College at the end of the current school year and repurpose the building for special education classes. The move follows Assembly Bill 99 impacting state aid for counties with under 50 students, though the board awaits possible legislative funds for 1967-68. Alfred Schilling cited the college’s 60-year history and proposed alternatives while the board allocated remaining funds to special education and welfare programs and explored moving welfare offices from the courthouse.
