The Wisconsin Senate defeated a bill to lower legal intoxication to .10 percent by a 22 to 8 vote. A separate measure approved funds of 2.5 million dollars from proposed UW agricultural land sales to build an Agricultural and Life Sciences facility at Madison, not expected before 1975. Senator Swan, R Elkhorn, sponsored. The Senate also approved 25 thousand dollars in state compensation for a National Guardsman killed in the line of duty.

Toll reaches 455 as Wisconsin traffic deaths rise

Warren to Speak at USS Racine Commissioning in Long Beach

Atty. Gen. Robert W. Warren will deliver the major address at the commissioning ceremonies for the Navy’s new tank landing ship the USS Racine named for Racine Wisconsin. Secretary of the Navy John H. Chafee invited Warren to speak. A Racine area delegation will attend. The ship, assigned to the Pacific Fleet, accommodates 32 officers and 585 enlisted men and is designed for rapid landing of troops and equipment under combat conditions.

Heavy Rains Hit Green County Coastal Areas

Heavy rains drenched Green County before dawn with Monroe reporting .41 inch at the sewage plant and up to 1.5 inches in north and east areas. Albany and Brooklyn also saw heavy totals. lightning caused outages for Wisconsin Power and Light and United Telephone. Three heifers near Monroe were killed by lightning.

Chicago Storm Leaves City in Turmoil and Death

A severe thunderstorm with 50 mph winds struck Chicago during the morning rush causing at least one death and injuries to more than 25. Winds toppled a chimney, collapsed a roof, and shattered windows on State Street and at Mercy Hospital. Bus service paused, elevated lines faced outages, and flights at O'Hare and Midway were delayed or diverted.
