Wisconsin Toll Reaches 452 After Fatal Highway Crashes

Two women died in separate Wisconsin accidents today, raising the 1971 highway fatality toll to 452 compared with 522 a year earlier. Jeanne LaCrosse, 19, of Milwaukee, died after a three car crash on Interstate 94. her unborn child also died. Ardyce Hazard, 48, was killed when the horse she rode was struck by a car on a Dane County road. Vilas County fire district declares SBA disaster area for aid loans.

Fireworks injure youth in Milwaukee incident

A 10-year-old boy had his lower jaw and right hand blown off in a fireworks blast in Gordon Park as Michael Paine and another youth found an aerial bomb and a flare. Paine remained in serious condition while authorities investigated if the bomb was among 24 stolen from Juneau Park. A 14-year-old suffered chest burns in a separate East Side incident linked to stolen bomb powder.

Youth charged in Beloit police shooting

James Jarnigan 18 of Denver was charged with attempted first degree murder of Patrolman Robert Hurley who was shot in the back while serving a probation violation warrant in Beloit. Bond set at $15,000. Case continued to July 12. Hurley hospitalized in satisfactory condition. Jarnigan surrendered Monday night.

Curfew Protests Stir Washington Park Arrests in Manitowoc

Police arrested 10 young people aged 16 to 25 during hours of unrest over an 11 p.m. park curfew. The clashes followed two weeks of protests with hundreds of spectators present and riot police deployed. most detainees were released, one remained in custody for absence without leave from the military.

U S Cuba swap 22 prisoners in Miami exchange

Fidel Castro's regime says it will release 18 Americans in exchange for four Cuban fishermen held by the United States. Fritz Sprandel spoke of being fired upon and held 46 days as the first arrival in Miami. The rest were to depart Cuba by boat or airlift.

Train derailment near Cochrane Wisconsin. no injuries reported

Thirty three Burlington Northern freight cars derailed early today near Cochrane. Engines and caboose stayed on track and Amtrak service unaffected. A tanker carrying flammable material was among the derailed cars. Buffalo County deputies sealed the site as repair crews headed from Illinois. Monroe council approves one way street and city purchases

The Monroe City Council voted to convert a Twining Park road to a one way from the west end of the east parking lot on 14th Avenue to Second Street. They also authorized buying a 1000 gallon pumper fire engine for 39994 and selling the old unit on commission. The meeting covered an urban renewal plan amendment and a regional water and sewer study with a 750 cost.
