A 15 month UAW CIO strike at Kohler Co. sparked a violent scene at the Sheboygan docks as a mob beat a non striking worker, overturned a car, and damaged homes. A mayor led peace talks in which Kohler officials walked out amid accusations of a publicity stunt.
Jefferson Township moves Prohibition forward as three taverns face Sunday closings. Juta tavern operated by Gerald Sawdey and Mrs Alma Hein Stabler, and Twin Grove tavern run by Andrew Bell were restricted from selling any beverages previously allowed fermented malt. Closing took effect last Sunday following a June town board vote chaired by T R Newman.

Lawrence Vinger of the Biggs Co-op says plans are drawn by Alvin F. Rote Co. for a rebuilt cheese factory to replace the fire-destroyed Biggs plant. If costs are right, construction could start soon, with a larger facility housing 12 kettles. The fire June 14 caused an estimated $100,000 loss. cheesemaker Gottfried Wirtz worked at the Argyle area plant.
Willis Kolden of Monroe burned his hand yesterday evening when gasoline used to clean a washing machine ignited. The fire at his apartment across from the Hilltop Inn was extinguished by a garden hose before fire crews arrived. five firefighters were dispatched but the call was cancelled a minute after the alarm.
Drownings across Wisconsin Tuesday claimed five lives including a seven year old boy and his sister and a sixth victim died today. Names include Michael 7 and Linda 6 of Wausau Thomas Figlmiller 30 of Eau Claire Kermit Von Loh 37 of Milwaukee Larry Landing 8 of Green Bay Cynthia Jones 3 of Lake Koshkonong. The ongoing drownings have risen to eighteen since Friday.
James M. Sigafus aged 58 died Saturday morning at his home in Apple River Illinois after a short illness. Services were held yesterday in Apple River. Surviving are his widow three sons four daughters including Mrs Seffrood Juda and Mrs Ellingson a sister and three brothers including Chris of Warren and Clarence of South Wayne.

Five members of a Beloit family survived a crash that killed Mrs Harriet Smith and her five children as their auto was hit by a Milwaukee Road passenger train at a country crossing near Allens Grove Wisconsin. Survivors include four Smith children and Beatrice Smith 21 with injuries ranging from skull fractures to internal injuries. The husband watched the incident from nearby home and hurried to the jail area after. The auto was a 1950 model ripped into three pieces as the 12 car train traveling about 60 mph struck it emerging from under a viaduct.
President Eisenhower told reporters the United States will negotiate in good faith at the Geneva Big Four meeting and denied any US admission of weakness. He said hopes for the mid July conference are high but tempered by food needs. He dodged questions on a second term and discussed minimum wage and Congress timing.
Nine Washington state prison officers were held at knifepoint during a revolt at Walla Walla prison. A recheck showed 11 men seized Tuesday morning as 33 convicts rioted to press parole changes. Two employees were released early. talks between officials and inmate leaders continued with no hostage release agreement.

A 31 year old law student, John R. Crocker Jr., confessed after 14 hours of questioning to beating stabbing and strangling Norma McCauley the Bel Air divorcee mother of three. He re enacted the crime showing how he hid in a closet and emerged as she returned from a July Independence Day party. Crocker was arrested after neighbors reported his threats and had quit his job as a houseboy to attend Southwestern Law School.
General Motors surged over 15 points in New York trading as investors cheered a proposed split. Other leading issues gained one to eight points while the broader list showed some losses. Volume neared three million shares, up from 2.68 million the day before.
Alderman Floyd Matzke reported the police and safety committee studies speed measuring devices for the Police Department with demonstrations planned in Monroe. Costs run about 450 dollars. Mayor Dunwiddie announced reappointment of Mrs. Schindler and Louis Blane to the Park Board. Fire Department may use Spring Square for practice. a 20 year lease with Green County Co-op Cheese Factory was approved for driveway space exchange. Claims totaling 4667.88 were approved.
City Council approved a one way traffic extension for 17th avenue north from 10th to 6th streets and 16th avenue south from 6th to 10th streets with enforcement pending sign installation. The measure passed after public input and a failed motion to table. Support from local merchants and cheese firms cited benefits, while several opponents warned of business impacts.
Lester Steiner, 51, a farm hand near Oregon in Dane County, was killed when a large truck rolled over him Tuesday night. Coroner Edmund Overton of Janesville ruled the death accidental, saying Steiner crawled under and slept as the vehicle, left parked in an Evansville garage, was driven away. The driver was not identified.
CIO brewery workers and LaCrosse Breweries Inc agreed to a settlement after a meeting with Circuit Judge Lincoln Neprud who offered mediation. Workers returned to their jobs this morning ending a stoppage that began June 20.
