Weekend drownings claim at least five lives in Wisconsin waters. Debra Lynn McCumber eight of Janesville is the only identified fatality, drowning Sunday in Mill Pond Delavan.
President Nixon signs a compromise to end U.S. military action in Indochina by Aug. 15 and hints at new war powers if needed to win a Cambodian settlement. He also outlines a brief price freeze amid wage price control uncertainty and timing for a new economic plan before the freeze ends. Tornadoes and severe storms strike the upper Midwest with two fatalities and many outages.
Terri Elmer wins Green County Ag Chest queen title with Mrs. Nelson McCammon coordinating. semi finalists met the public at the Dairy Recipe Center Browntown and joined a parade. Mrs. Kaderly will represent Green County in the District Bake Off televised on Channel 3 Madison August 16. Mrs. Kaderly, mother of eight, volunteers as foods projects leader for 4 H clubs. No Monroe Area Civil Defense siren testing on Wednesday July 4. July testing set for July 18.
Terri Elmer was crowned Green County Dairy Queen 1973 by retiring queen Wendy Hartwig. Marianne Dickson was named Green County Dairy Princess for 1973 74. Newly named Community Dairy Queens include Brooklyn Queen Robin Templeton and Monticello Queen Janice Wettach. The day included 4 H parade winners, Dairy Show champions, and a tour of the Milk Specialties Plant. Severe thunderstorm watches covered parts of the region.
Four Wisconsin utilities announced an order for two nuclear generating units with an option for four more. Westinghouse will supply the steam systems and fuel for plants at Point Beach Manitowoc County and a future Kewaunee County unit. Sites under review include Sheboygan Wood Grant Kenosha and Jefferson Counties.
Washington reports U S fighter missions in Cambodia rising from about 150 daily to the 200s while B52 bomber flights remain around 40. Pentagon cited better weather and Cambodian rebel actions as causes, amid a policy to halt Indochina activity after August 15 and seek congressional approval for further bombing.
Nixon defense mounted by Colson and Buzhardt amid Dean testimony before the Senate Watergate committee. McGovern aide Hart doubts more Watergate focus would have changed 1972 outcome. Humphrey says Dean made a strong case against the President. Richardson cited possible questioning method and public participation in site reviews. Einstein son hospitalized in stable condition after heart attack in Falmouth Massachusetts.
President Nixon signed legislation increasing Social Security benefits by 5.6 percent for about 30 million recipients. The bill, passed by Congress and flown to the White House, extends the debt ceiling to November 30 and raises payroll contributions by 35.10 dollars for workers earning at least 12 600 dollars, taking effect July 1.
