Industry debate over revising Swiss cheese grades to allow some glan g via B grade while continuing to restrict glass content. Producers cite demand for clean cheese and premium for A and B grades, with calls for buyer presence at grading to prevent plugs and improve marketing.
The state department of agriculture defines glass in Swiss cheese as cracks in parallel layers with clean cuts found in cheese beds. Pred Galli of the Wisconsin Swiss and Limburg Cheese Producers Association says glass is slatey in layers, causes cheese to crumble, and prevents cohesive cutting, preventing eyes formation.
Wisconsin and eastern market handlers object to glass in B grade A heavy Swiss cheese inventories. Wilbur Witte notes slow movement of glassy cheese. Albert Stoldt compares glass to plugging and calls for reductions. Graders E O Lee and Gottlieb Werren discuss policy and grading practices as industry representatives push for changes to speed shipments.
The Associated Press reports rail switchmen at several lines in Chicago and Detroit areas called in sick. In Chicago, lines including Santa Fe inner bell and Chicago and Illinois Western were heavily affected, with 100 percent and about 20 percent absenteeism. In Detroit, Chesapeake and Ohio and Wabash lines showed large employee no-shows, with freight movement severely hampered and some cargoes redirected.
The Internal Revenue Service warned that farmers must mail their final income tax return by midnight tomorrow if they did not file an estimate by January 15. Farmers who filed an estimate by January 15 have until March 15 to submit the final return.
Offenburge Germany 53 year old forester Josef Ritter admitted killing 56 concentration camp inmates and was sentenced to life imprisonment for the slaying of a German woman and a young German girl.
More than 70 scouting leaders and their wives attended a Union Presbyterian church appreciation banquet in Green district. Dr. W. E. Rideout presented awards to Troop 105 Juda, Troop 106 Monticello, and Explorer Ship 501 Monroe for outstanding recruiting. veteran and five to ten year service certificates were given to several leaders. Officers were installed and jamboree films shown.
The assembly approved a veteran housing loan liberalization raising home value to 15000 and loan limit to 3500. A separate measure allows moratorium on principal for recalled veterans. Senate passage sent both to the assembly. A third bill aids widows and children of veterans with education loans.
Atlanta reports Governor Herman Talmacksigned into law a bill banning hooded masks and cross burning, actions historically tied to the Ku Klux Klan. The measure targets intimidation and hate symbols.
The Soviet bloc failed to delay a United Nations vote on indicting communist China as an aggressor in Korea. Russia Poland and Czechoslovakia requested a one day adjournment of the political committee citing lack of instructions on amendments to the U S proposal and the Arab Asian seven power conference plan. The committee rejected the request 32 to 10 with 12 abstentions and proceeded toward a vote expected to pass with two thirds support. Britain reportedly agreed to back the U S proposals and abstain on the Asian Arab plan.
State senate passed a bill to convert Monroe school operations from a special charter to a joint common school district. Senator Melvin J. Olson sponsored the measure and urged immediate assembly action by Representative Harry A. Keegan to raise financing limits for remodeling and annual budget needs.
Allied forces in Korea press a limited advance along the western front as Chinese artillery pounds positions near Suwon and Kansong. A U N officer notes stubborn enemy defense while task forces shell the east coast and coastal towns.
In Lone Rock Wisconsin the official weather station logged a 53 below zero reading, the coldest in the nation that day. The town of about 500 saw closed schools and slow traffic as residents coped with the extreme cold and snow. station chief Gaylord Trumbel noted the river valley’s geography contributed to the record.
Senators Lodge and Johnson urged authorizing a U S foreign legion of one million or more young men from other nations as an adjunct to boosting armed forces to 3 462 000. Voorhees supported the idea while urging 18 year olds and mar aeld nc wh ren men unacr oo. UMST for all fit men was urged by Voorhees Bush and Menninger as hearings continued.
New York stocks opened mixed and edged lower amid a volatile session. Gains appeared in Nickel Filate, Du Pont, Sears Roebuck, J I Case, and Douglas Aircraft, while other issues fluctuated about a dollar in either direction.
Washington reports Taft and other GOP leaders rallying more than 2000 party members and signaling strong confidence in a 1952 victory. Taft argues foreign policy will decide the election and outlines a program built on a strong America and alliances with nations willing to join in denying external threats since the Civil War.
Fire destroyed the Beloit Masonic Temple, a three story brick building at the edge of the business district. Firemen battled the blaze as temperatures plunged to 25 below zero, leaving only ice glazed walls and a collapsed roof. Ice froze at the Northwestern crossing and halted rail traffic while crews hacked away at the ice in the morning. Three Beloit fire units plus one from Beloit Illinois fought the fire from 3 30 a m, but contents could not be saved. An alley kept the fire from reaching the public library adjoining the site.
The March of Dimes container stolen from The Times office last Thursday was found over the weekend in Waah- Toor othet. Police continue the investigation as J. H. Schwaiger vows to catch the thief. the stand was left behind and the container was empty when located.
Leland D Lathrop of Antioch Illinois was killed when his car collided with a North Shore Line passenger train at a crossing here. The crash occurred today and involved an automobile fatality at a rail crossing.
A near record cold snap hits Monroe, Green county, and much of the state with temperatures well below zero. Brodhead reports a strong 36 below as observers tally historic lows, while forecasts hint at continued frigid weather with moderating days ahead.
