Highway Committee Weighs Budget Impact on Raises

Young Prisoner Facing Sentence Takes Life in Jail
A 19 year old rural Monroe farm laborer, Vilas C. Thompson, sentenced to a year in Green Bay reformatory for a parole violation, was found hanged in the county jail at 10:06 a.m. by Deputy William J. Guider. Coroner Deininger ruled death a self-inflicted strangulation using a blanket strip attached to a coat hook. Thompson had been awaiting a court hearing after earlier probation and prior convictions for burglary and contributing to delinquency of a minor. He was to be transported to Green Bay the next day. The body was moved to Winslow for funeral arrangements. He is survived by his mother visiting relatives in Freeport.

A Dane County man died in a Madison hospital from injuries sustained Friday after being struck by a car. The death raises Wisconsin's highway toll for the year to 49, surpassing last year’s count. Ingvald Eldal, 69, of Madison, had died in the same incident.
