Direct Dial Line Installed by Firm

A private inter company telephone line and direct long distance dialing was installed at Monroe Wisconsin Power and Light Co by United Telephone Co. Miss Margaret Burgi and George Byington announced the system will enable direct calls to the Madison general office or any district office power plant or substation. It is expected to handle at least one third more calls daily and save employee time while enabling faster service and future features like teletypewriter, data processing, conference calls and remote control.

1959 Corn Crop Falls to Low Quality Level

Washington reports the 1959 corn crop moving to market is below last year and the five year average in quality. Only 44 percent of inspected receipts were graded No. 3 or better in December, versus 79 percent a year earlier and 66 percent for the five year December average. High moisture content is the principal downgrading factor.

An anonymous caller claimed a bomb would be aboard a Capital Airlines plane in Milwaukee and another in Lansing Michigan. Authorities stated the calls were hoaxes and no device was found.

Advisory Committee Sets Plan for Monroe Meeting

The advisory committee for Monroe’s inter agency group studying social problems will meet at noon tomorrow to prepare an agenda for a public meeting later this week. Rev Glen H Ridnour serves as temporary chairman and aims to move the plan forward constructively. Members include Dr Dean D Miller chairman Roger L Elmer county family court commissioner and Mrs Raymond R Kubiy Jr former county welfare worker.

Racine Youth Sisters Admit School Damage

A 15 year old boy and his 11 year old sister confessed to breaking into the Mitchell school in Racine over the weekend and causing 5 000 to 6 000 in damage. They named another boy in four break ins and said they acted for money when they could not find it. Desks overturned glass broken ink splattered records mutilated. Police said they are being questioned about other burglaries.

New York stocks held firm as the market resisted further declines and showed an irregular price pattern late in the afternoon. Trading remained fairly active with fractional gains and losses among key issues. McDonnell Aircraft rose by more than six points amid varied moves among high priced and speculative stocks.

Ford Award Figi Wins Pasture Yield Honors

William Figi Jr of Jordan Township is among 12 farmers nationwide selected for the Ford Farm Efficiency Awards for high yields in 12 crop areas. Figi receives the pasture award for a 233 acre dairy operation yielding about 7000 pounds of milk per acre overall and 5320 pounds per acre in May July. The winners travel to Dearborn Michigan February 15 16 to receive plaques from Henry Ford II.

A E Wells prominent former Monroe businessman died November 5 1959 at Kenmore He was over 80 and had lived in Monroe Ripon Wisconsin since 1923 where he co owned and served as secretary treasurer of Blumer Brewing Corp He helped develop a modern ice cream plant shipping daily cream to Chicago in refrigerated cars then moved to North Tonawanda New York and later Kenmore Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery Corry Pennsylvania

Duke, Spanish War Veterans Chief, Dies

W. R. Duke aged 78, national commander in chief of the United Spanish War Veterans, died today after a long illness in Wichita Falls Texas. A native of Alabama he enlisted in 1898 and later fought with the 144th Infantry in 130 battles and skirmishes in the Philippines.

New York actress Diana Barrymore 38 died Monday from a heart attack with no prior heart history. Authorities found no self harm indication. She had sought a theatrical comeback after alcoholism and broken marriages and had written Too Much Too Soon.
