Two deaths on Tuesday pushed Wisconsin's 1973 traffic toll to 45, down from 48 on the same date a year earlier. The digest also notes a Fire Destroys Van Gene Machine Corp in Sheboygan Falls with $100,000 estimate and no immediate cause.
Washington and Hanoi unveil a 12 page peace accord restricting the cease fire to South Vietnam while Laos and Cambodia settle their internal affairs by their own people. The document calls for troop withdrawals and a four power control force.
President adviser Henry Kissinger said U S prisoners of war will be handed to American medical teams in Hanoi at roughly two week intervals after the Vietnam peace agreement is signed. He disclosed the mechanics for returning the 479 Americans held in North Vietnam and Laos. American prisoners will be released in installments about every two weeks.
Kissinger outlined a 60 day return window for all prisoners held in North Vietnam and Laos with returns by U.S. medical teams to Hanoi and onward air transport to sites chosen by U.S. officials. A temporary joint military commission will set return sites while prioritizing the seriously ill, wounded, old, and female detainees. Melvin Laird said evacuation teams and aircraft would be ready soon after the cease-fire becomes effective.
Three residents filed letters of intent to run for three open Monroe Board of Education seats. Incumbent William Endrulat seeks a second term, Dr. Robert Brauchle a former member, and Warren Schneeberger seeks his first term. Ballot order was drawn, placing Endrulat first, Schneeberger second, Brauchle third.
Peggy Haas Monroe High School junior departs for Brazil as part of the AFS School program. The event included a school assembly with plaques from Mayor Clifford Reese and Monroe High, gifts from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a tea with the American Field Service Chapter. Peggy received a scrapbook gift for Colegio Estadual de Goiania and a Portuguese dictionary along with other tokens.
The Monroe United Fund surpassed its goal by 770 this year with donations and pledges totaling 34 945 81 dollars. The drive aimed for 34 175 dollars, and a Times typo suggested a higher figure in Tuesday’s edition.
The casket of Lyndon Baines Johnson was placed on a White House jet from Bergstrom Base at 9:12 a.m. CST heading to Washington. Mrs. Johnson, the two daughters and their husbands, and one grandchild accompanied the body. Johnson, 64, died Monday from severe coronary artery disease. The body will lie in state in the U S Capitol until Thursday morning.
