The unofficial 1972 Wisconsin traffic fatalities reached 1,166, tying 1968’s record while 1973’s toll stood at 40 on the day, down from 47 in 1972. Two deaths were noted: Chester Hein, 56, of Milwaukee from a Dec. 14 crash, and Raymond Williamson, 23, a Racine motorcyclist injured Aug. 29 who died Monday.
The body of former President Lyndon Baines Johnson will lie in state in the Capitol rotunda after dying of coronary thrombosis at 64 in San Antonio. He will lie in state from noon today in Austin before a Wednesday procession to Washington and Thursday funeral in D.C. then burial in the LBJ Ranch family cemetery.
Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho met for 3 hours 45 minutes at the International Conference Center in Paris before Kissinger flew to Washington. Officials cited no final decision on a cease fire or signature date, while South Vietnam’s Nguyen Van Thieu was said to have approved the agreement in principle.
An armada of fishing boats and planes evacuated 5,000 Icelanders from Vestmannayjar after Heymaey erupted. By dawn lava neared the town, 300 remained on the island, and officials feared harbor closure while residents packed belongings for transport. No casualties were reported.
