Senate Finance Committee Advances Tax Cut Bill To Vote

The Senate Finance Committee approved a $11.5 billion tax cut bill over administration objections. It repeals $455 million in excise taxes on luggage jewelry cosmetics and furs and adopts Johnson’s immediate 14 percent withholding rate. Full Senate action and debate begin next week with expected passage urged by the president.

Meyer Named Proxy For Superior College

Karl W. Meyer 38 of Madison was appointed president of Superior State College by the College Board of Regents to succeed Jim Dan Hill 66 who becomes co-director of the joint staff of the State Coordinating Committee for Higher Education. Meyer is a Fort Wayne Indiana native and has served as assistant director of the college system since last fall.

Armory to host Sunday oral polio vaccine center

Thousands of county residents will get their third Sabin oral polio vaccine at public clinics including the Monroe National Guard Armory Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drive-in sites are canceled due to staffing and traffic. curbside service is available for the infirm. Slayer Nabbed In Escape Chase

OKLAHOMA CITY A convicted murderer escaped custody Wednesday abducting six people stealing four cars and robbing a store. Howard O Lowery 25 was captured five hours later 70 miles away by a highway patrolman. He was armed with a shotgun and offered no resistance. Lowery serving a life term for a 1960 murder was taken from McAlester State Penitentiary to University hospital for a hand check.

Brodhead Jaycees name C S Pierce Outstanding Senior Citizen

C S Pierce of Brodhead named Brodhead outstanding senior citizen of the year by the local Jaycees. He served as mayor from 1950 to 1954, chaired the County Board since 1957, helped organize the Brodhead Industrial Development Corp, and has led Brodhead Progress Inc since 1958. He also received recognition from the Music Operators of America in 1963 and has been a longtime director. He is married to Marie Rufenacht of Monroe.

A Manhattan ad firm Eastor Hilton Chesley Clifford Atherton was charged on a 58 count indictment with promoting Regimen weight loss tablets through a nationwide TV and print campaign. Also named were Drug Research Corp its president John Andreadis and chief chemist Saul Miklean and New Drug Institute president Arthur D Herrick. The pill marketed as worthless for weight reduction sold four million boxes for 16 million dollars before being pulled from the market.

Teehan Elected Chairman By Green County Democrats

Philip J. Teehan was elected chairman of the Green County Democratic party at the annual meeting in the Commercial and Savings Bank. He succeeds Archie Myers who becomes vice chairman. Howard Lueck Dies of Injuries on Cadiz Township Farm

Howard W. Lueck 54 died from chest injuries after a tree fell and rebounded as he tried to dodge it on his Cadiz Township farm. Coroner Richard Wagner said no inquest will be held. He lived on the farm since birth, married Marie Kraus in 1938, and leaves a wife, two daughters, a brother, two sisters, and three grandchildren. Services set for Saturday at Stuessy funeral home with Masonic rites at 8 p.m. Friends may call after noon tomorrow.
