1959 Green County soil conservation goals reviewed

Agencies gave reports at the annual Soil Conservation Service meeting in the Courthouse. Goals for 1960 include 45 new cooperators 25 basic plans 120 follow ups and 20 miles of gully control structures. 1959 saw 55 cooperators 159 acres of tree planting and 211 percent of hedgerow targets, with high overall conservation activity in Green County.

Gas Line Sought to Bring North Central Gas by 1960 61

Monroe residents may gain natural gas service by late 1960 or early 1961 as Northern Natural Gas Co. seeks a Federal Power Commission permit to build a line from East Dubuque to Janesville. The plan would serve Monroe and nearby towns, with 75 to 78 million cubic feet daily, pending need and feasibility proof at a public hearing.

First National Buys Downtown Property on 17th Avenue

First National Bank announced purchase of the 900 block on 17th avenue north of the bank from Fred J. Karlen of Winslow. The L shaped site includes 909-11 17th avenue and two adjoining lots with 80 foot frontage and 12 foot depth. Edward M. Adam said the land is for future bank expansion and current use will be parking. The Karlen family owned the tract since the 1880s and were long associated with the bank.
