Baboon Kidney Transplants Reported From AP News
Primate kidneys from a monkey, chimpanzee, and two baboons have been transplanted into four humans since last October. recipients at Tulane Charity in New Orleans and Colorado General and VA hospitals in Denver faced near-certain death without the procedures. One patient, a 32 year old woman, died from the disease prompting the transplant. Jefferson Davis, 44, a New Orleans dock worker, received chimpanzee kidneys and died after chest infection and pneumonia. A baboon kidney transplant at Colorado General left a 40 year old man in good condition, with a second baboon kidney transplant to another man reported as satisfactory after a five hour operation.
