Luther Valley Church Destroyed by Early Morning Fire
The year-old Luther Valley church near Orfordville burned to ashes at 3:45 a.m. with an estimated loss of 125000. The frame structure, five miles southeast of Orfordville, was under remodeling. 90 minutes after discovery the building was gone. Pastor Rev Marcus Lewis and family reside nearby in a farm tenant house. remodeling began in late April and cost about 40000, adding space for chancel sacristy offices study and more. Fire cause determined. heating system deemed unlikely. The church, a Wisconsin landmark built in 1871, served a 20 mile area and was famed for Norwegian suppers.

Duerst of New Glarus Dies at 84
John G. Duerst 84 of New Glarus died at Masshardt convalescent home after months of illness. An early New Glarus cheesemaker who arrived in 1904, he moved to a farm in 1912 and to New Glarus in 1928. Born December 3 1866 in Canton Glarus Switzerland he married Ida Girschweiler in 1890. they came to the United States in 1904. The couple observed their golden anniversary in May 1940. Ida died July 25 1940. Surviving are a daughter, two sons, 17 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services set for 2 pm tomorrow at Zentner Funeral Home New Glarus with Rev W J Stuckey officiating. Burial in church cemetery. Friends may call at Zentner.

George E. Kohl of 807 11th street sustained a minor chest cut after a head on collision at the intersection of highway 11 and 5th avenue at 2 p.m. yesterday. His car front was demolished. A second incident in the 1800 block of 10th street at 5 p.m. involved three vehicles, a truck driven by Frederick C. Diseh, a car driven by Fred Vogt, and a parked car owned by Sanford J. Hanson, all sustaining damage with Vogt’s car also damaged.
