Giant C124 Plane Goes Down At Sea Off Hawaii
A C124 military cargo plane with eight aboard went down in the Pacific about 450 miles west of Honolulu on a flight from Wake to Hawaii. Survivors were reported among the crew, and the body of a Navy man was aboard. The incident followed a string of conflicting reports as search aircraft from Hawaii and Hickam Air Force Base converged on the reported crash area.

Bernard Marasch aged 48 of rural New London was killed when a large chunk of frozen wood shavings was hurled down a chute from a 40 foot silo at the McGraw Edison Co. He was struck by the flying material during work at the New London plant.

Ruth Chambers, a Monroe High School senior and daughter of Alderman Evan C. Chambers, was chosen Chapter Sweetheart of the Stewart Chapter of DeMolay at a holiday dance in the Masonic Temple. Teala Riddle was runner up while Ruth was escorted by Tony Lux and plans exist to enter the state sweetheart contest in Madison on February 15 and 16.
