Police investigate after a 12 foot high window at St John’s United Church of Christ showed a small hole and glass splinters. A wedding continued as guests heard a sudden crack during a prayer by Rev. Calvin P. Fischer. No bullet recovered. no gunfire evidence found. Chief Henry Hefty helped lead the inquiry.

4 H Music Festival Scheduled Tomorrow

Mrs. Edna Sandvold Scherer dies in Monroe at 57
Mrs. Edna Ovidia Sandvold Scherer, 57, wife of Monroe Clinic administrator Harold E. Scherer, died at Monroe Manor Nursing Home. Born 1908 in Sioux City, she trained as a nurse, worked at Deaconess Hospital, and later served Grace Lutheran Church and various groups. Survived by husband, son Gary W., daughters Sandra Brandl and Karen Keel, siblings Gordon Sandvold and Gerda Farr, six grandchildren. Funeral at Grace Lutheran Church with burial Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials requested to Grace Lutheran Church.

Astronauts Elliot M. Lee Jr and Charles A. Bassett II died when their 738 fighter trainer crashed into the roof of a McDonnell Aircraft space center building in St Louis. Ten workers were injured, none seriously. The plane burst into flames in foggy conditions. visibility was 1% miles, ceiling 800 feet. Lee and Bassett were to join Gemini 9 missions later this year.

False fire alarm investigated near Albany Attica store
Sheriff's deputies investigate a false fire alarm at a store in Attica about eight miles northwest of Albany. Seven teen firemen responded after the call came in at 7 59 p.m. and was canceled at 8 14 p.m. by radio.

Monroe Civil Defense Eyes Federal Aid For Sirens
Gilbert E Czarnecki announced at the Defense Auxiliary Police dinner that federal matching funds for Monroe storm sirens are expected within days. He said Monroe has 20 approved fallout shelters for 4457 people, with five not yet licensed, and urged owners to join to add 600 more spots. He noted two managers per shelter and a possible full time shelter director to coordinate the program, aiming for 100 percent shelter in a nuclear disaster. The basement of Monroe’s new municipal building may become an emergency Civil Defense operating center, and CD police were commended for cooperation with regular police.
