Douglas Buehl Wins 25 Bond in Thorp Scholarship

Monticello High School senior Douglas Buehl won a $25 U S Savings Bond in the Twelfth Annual Thorp Finance Foundation Scholarship Competition. Winners compete for two $1,000 scholarships for Wisconsin colleges. Essays on teachers influence or lowering voting age determined finalists.

Science Fair At Monroe High Draws Large Crowd

Nearly 1,000 people attended the Monroe Senior High School Science Fair held last evening with displays from elementary schools St. Victor's and both junior and senior high levels. The High School Science Club led by President Charles Einbeck organized tables, setup, and the Apollo 8 mockup. Wisconsin Power and Light showcased an electric car Mars IP under the school canopy, while Mr. McGuire of Wisconsin Telephone Co. spoke on tele-magic and future communications. Faculty commended the turnout.

New Monroe Directory Out Lists Population at 9165

The Monroe city directory is being distributed this week with a population figure of 9165, up 393 from 1966. It includes a ward map, general index, ad index, classified directory, and a separate homeowners by street numbers section. Copies cost 20 dollars and a few remain at 1108B 16th Ave in the Ruf Building basement. A & W Drive In tops the first listings, followed by Kubly and Johnson families among many common surnames. A citizen-education Tarr task force report committee, led by Emil Kostner of Thorp, was announced Monday.

Bloodmobile Visit Scheduled for Browntown Church

Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Peace United Church of Christ in Browntown on Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. Appointments may be arranged by calling Rev. R. Brigham Wheelock at 966-3206. Mrs. Frank Guttmer leads donor recruitment with several 4-H clubs and town volunteers assisting.

California Floods and Car Crashes Hit Rock County and Monroe

Two Brodhead men, Noger Johnson and Robert E. Davis, hurt in a three vehicle crash on Highway 11 near Brodhead. Johnson treated for head lacerations and possible internal injuries. Davis concussed with facial and chest injuries. A semi truck blocked the road, flares set, fire crew cleared debris. Additional Monroe area accidents reported with no injuries.

Nixon seeks new peace partnership with Britain

AP dispatch reports President Nixon's 16 hour schedule in London focused on reviving the special British relation with two cabinet sessions at No 10 and meetings with Prime Minister Wilson, Heath, Macmillan, and Thorpe, plus a Buckingham Palace luncheon with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
