Detroit GM plans widespread layoffs across 22 of 23 plants as Fisher Body Mansfield Ohio strike halts parts supply. GM warns 80,000 workers may rise to 100,000. unions protest actions, suspensions widen.
Wisconsin NFO members held live stock auctions to cut milk supply and lift prices. About 2,000 dairy cows were listed in Green Bay with at least 500 sold at Reeseville and over 300 sold at Lone Rock.
Kansas City students give quirky reasons after a first grade prompt about George Washington and the cherry tree. The Red Bridge elementary class responded with answers about cherries, flagpoles, city building, and chopped trees.
Ken Smith and Ralph Phillips, former Fifth Air Force flight engineers, linked in Australia during World War II and later formed Furniture and Appliance City in Monroe. From a 16th Ave store in 1945 to a 20 000 square foot center south of Monroe on Highway 69, the partners expanded through promotions and ads while adding furniture. They moved business to Highway 68 South in 1957 and consolidated appliances before relocating next to Farm and Fleet. The couple have large families with four and five children respectively.
The Pengra Service Station at 1607 First Center Avenue Brodhead was robbed early today. A cash register containing Tuesday’s receipts was broken open and money taken. Police Chief Calvin Wickline suspects entry after 5 a.m. after a door check. The exact amount stolen was not disclosed.
Washington Wisconsin Democratic senators divided as the Senate passed a debt ceiling increase to 336 billion dollars by a 54 to 23 vote. Gaylord Nelson supported the bill while William Proxmire opposed it.
Maria de la Torre, 34, wife of a local farmer in Santiago de Ubeda, gave birth to triplets Tuesday night. The first baby was born in a taxi on the way to the hospital, the second at the hospital door on a stretcher, and the third in the operating room of the emergency department. All are reported in good condition. Maria Alredy had three children prior.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile collected 58 pints at the Bank of Brodhead surpassing the 50 pint quota. Four donations were rejected while six donors reached the one gallon milestone, led by Mrs. Lloyd Iverson and others. Mrs. A O Lehnherr led the event with nurse assistants.
The Monroe Jaycettes plan a Bloodmobile visit with 115 pints goal now moved to Monroe Junior High School gym due to anticipated crowds. Walk ins welcome 1 to 6 30 p m. Baby sitting free via High School French Club and free taxi service.
Louis F. Blanc of Monroe retires after 38 years with Wisconsin Power and Light Company. A district serviceman since 1951, Blanc was saluted at a Monday night gathering in the Eugene Hotel Building American Legion Hall. He began as a sub station operator in 1929 earning 36 cents an hour, later became a local representative and trouble and service man, and joined the Pioneer Club in 1954. Blanc, a native of Adams Township, is married to Hulda Schober and has two sons and three grandchildren. He resides in Tustin California.
The Heart Fund hosts the Song in My Heart benefit at the junior high auditorium with Green County Barber Shop Chorus headlining. Evening Times sports editor Dick Campbell serves as master of ceremonies joined by cousin Artie Sullivan for a comedy singing act. Proceeds support Heart Fund during February.
Mr and Mrs Willis F Disch Sr of New Glarus report their son Marine Cpl Willis F Disch Jr 23 wounded in action February 19 near Quagtri Republic of Vietnam Fragment wounds to the upper legs from a 105 mm shell He is treated at the 3rd Marine Battalion hospital and listed in good condition Disch has been overseas since September 1966 and recently returned to active duty after malaria treatment aboard the USS Repose.
Nearly forty residents oppose aerial DDT spraying for Dutch elm disease and pressure a shift to tree trimming and replacement. The council rescinded the helicopter spraying and declined an alternate program, while health officials noted minimal human harm in recommended doses.
