Science Open House at Monroe High School February 27

Blaze Destroys Freeport Store

Fire last night destroyed the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. store at 304 S. Chicago in Freeport. More than 40 firefighters fought the blaze which began about 5:45 p.m. All employees and patrons escaped unharmed as the store and adjoining lot occupied a full city block. Roof collapse occurred about an hour after ignition and flames threatened a nearby warehouse. One firefighter was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

Sandy Kanter a 19 year old worker was freed from debris as George Decker and Orlando Gomez pried her free amid flames and smoke.
