AAP reports Israel may assist Egypt in clearing the Suez Canal blocked by sunken ships since the 1967 war. Prime Minister Golda Meir said any withdrawal from the east bank depends on a peace framework with Egypt and opposed unilateral troop pullouts.
The moon will enter Earth's shadow tonight, with total eclipse from 1:03 a.m. to 2:26 a.m. CST, beginning at 11:52 a.m. CST and clearing by 3:37 a.m. Observers in most locations on earth can witness an eclipse at least once annually.
David Eisenhower, son in law of President Nixon, will report March 22 to Dam Neck Virginia for eight weeks training before joining the guided missile cruiser Albany's navigational department. He turns 23 on March 31, will graduate from Officer Candidate School March 12 at Newport and receive a commission as an ensign in the Naval Reserve, with three years of active duty.
Madison public school teachers would be prohibited from smoking in lounges under a policy endorsed by the Board of Education. The plan requires formal approval at the March 1 meeting and would begin August 1. The board rejected a student smoking compromise, with Herb Marcus proposing a total ban as a health measure and Robert Dezonia opposing it.
MADISON AP reports Wisconsin declares snowmobiles motor vehicles and nine hunters paid over 300 in fines and costs after convictions for carrying loaded or uncased firearms on snowmobiles. Fines ranged 10 to 35 per offense and included a three year hunting and fishing license suspension. One offender fled toward an open field before wardens spotted him from a road with a loudspeaker, another was cornered in a gulley and arrested while trying to unload the firearm.
A Con Edison transformer failure left midtown Manhattan in darkness for over four hours on Sunday night. Initial reports cited an explosion, later attributed to two electrical short circuits that sounded like explosions. The outage disrupted traffic signals and stranded visitors at the Empire State Building observatories.
Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the Saigon led drive into Laos is on schedule and supports the plan to withdraw 50,000 U.S. troops by May 1, lowering total strength to 284,000. He stated 10,000 U.S. troops act as backup in South Vietnam and that operations aim to speed Vietnamization while remaining within congressional prohibitions.

After a nine day, 900 000 mile mission they spoke at a news conference about Cone Crater and the rocks gathered to date, stressing the geologic value and the mission's success.
Charles Mathias presided over the annual Ladies Night at Monroe Country Club with about 170 attendees. Walter Babula led planning, and Ailan Holtshopple coordinated preparations. Guests included Optimist Rotary Kiwanis officers and Times and WEKZ reps. Diane Schuler and Debbie Krauss performed with guitar accompaniment. new members were introduced. Kiwanis marked its 50th anniversary upcoming. The Townsmen provided music for dancing.
A strong earthquake struck at 6 01 am rippling across 350 miles from Fresno to near the Mexican border. Two people died in Los Angeles from building damage while Newhall Saugus and the Midnight Mission building in downtown LA suffered heavy damage. Major highways closed and power outages reported as aftershocks followed.
Stephen Midthun, a paralyzed teen from Lena Illinois, will celebrate his 15th birthday Thursday Feb 11 while in Chicago hospitals.
