18 Year Convict Wins New Trial
The Wisconsin Supreme Court vacated the 18 year sentence of Clarence Burnett for first degree murder and ordered his release from Waupun to Racine County for further proceedings possibly a new trial. Burnett had pled guilty in 1945 and waived trial counsel under claims of pressure and safety concerns voiced by officials. The circuit judge found inadequate education and intelligence to waive counsel, a finding supported by Justice Gordon.

R A Williams 73 former Verona village president and Dane County Board veteran died in a Madison hospital Monday. A Dodgeville native, he served on the board since 1949, was a retired mail carrier and long time Verona Volunteer Fire Department secretary. Funeral services set for Wednesday afternoon in Verona. He was also longtime secretary of the fire department.
