Boris Karloff, famed for Frankenstein, dies at 81 in London after a 58 year career and more than 130 films. Born William Henry Pratt in 1887, he remained British by citizenship and split time between London and Hollywood with wife Evelyn Helmar and daughter Sara Jane among survivors.

Monroe High School DECA students in marketing courses are collecting a community survey to assess consumer buying motives in Monroe. The project aims to apply market research methods, produce a state and national competition report, and provide a clear picture of local residents buying motives. The effort echoes a Jaycee survey from two years prior with updated age and income breakdowns. Residents are asked to welcome and cooperate, with completed surveys collected later and results published in The Monroe Evening Times.

Monticello Pioneer Mrs Susanna Elmer Dies at 92

Susanna Elmer a Monticello resident and longtime farmer’s wife died at St. Clare Hospital after a stroke. Born December 17 1876 in Elm Canton Glarus Switzerland she immigrated in 1882 and lived in Green County Exter Township and Monticello. Arrangements are pending at Voegeli Funeral Home.

Harold Hap Beach 58 of 1322 10th St died 10:35 p m Saturday Feb 1 at St Clare Hospital after diabetic complications. A Monroe volunteer firefighter from 1942 to 1964 he was a noted photographer and youth activity helper. Born December 30 1910 in Clarno Township he leaves his mother Mrs Cleora Ritter and three half brothers.
