The Associated Press reports Wisconsin’s 1961 holiday toll at 890 as of New Year’s weekend, down from 922 a year earlier. No deaths recorded during the holiday span since Friday 6 p.m., though multiple fatal crashes in other counties and states are noted including Anton Lubis in Darien and Roy Flood near Hatfield.

MADISON The State Tax Department ramps to implement Wisconsin s new selective three percent sales levy by Feb 1 requiring over 200 new staff. About 125 clerical workers will mail forms and issue $2 permits to merchants who collect and remit the tax.
Monroe officials announce an expanded winter sports program with a large skating rink at Recreation Park for seventh graders and older, a separate Lincoln school rink for elementary students, and a sledding area on Twining Park. A new ice rink at the tennis courts is planned for later, with warming shelter improvements and wooden slides proposed for next winter.

MARATHON FL A Coast Guard and salvage crew battled heavy seas to recover two wrecked trucks and the bodies of two men after a collision on the Seven Mile Bridge. Missing are Thomas James and W B Easterling. Lifeboat crews rescued three occupants from a flatbed while Lonnie Allen and a woman, Newton, perished in swift tides.
Paris report says President De Gaulle’s plan for peace with revolt-torn Algeria triggered fresh violence as two Muslims and a French policeman were killed in Oran. European shops shut, and riot police moved in as Paris hints at a French withdrawal from Algeria and a possible sovereign, independent Algerian state with guaranteed French interests.
