Patrol Reports Travel in State Still Hazardous

Bright sunshine and heavy snow blanketed the area as rural and city residents continued work under drifting conditions. Highway crews reported improving driving, but many roadways remained hazardous with five foot drifts and packed snow. Police towed cars for blocking snow removal and urged public cooperation. accidents involved drivers at 2:52 p m and 16th Avenue park exits.

Twenty-Two Persons Killed in Mexican Bus Crash

A head on collision of two buses north of Mexico City near Salanca on the Pan American Highway left twenty two dead and forty nine injured. Thirty ambulances from five cities were summoned to transport the wounded to nearby hospitals.

Herman Dieckhoff a longtime Monroe High School janitor died suddenly at 70 after shoveling snow. He retired four years ago but helped part time. Survived by widow Grace and four stepsons, plus a sister and 10 grandchildren. Services Saturday at Stuessy Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Teacher of the Year named in CES A17 and district honors

Gail Roub, Ft. Atkinson High School teacher and Monroe native, named Teacher of the Year in Cooperative Educational Service Agency No. 17. He won over reps from numerous schools and was later considered for Wisconsin Teacher of the Year. Roub, a Monroe graduate, UW alum, and former Fulbright scholar, teaches modern world and Russian history and journalism at Ft. Atkinson. Herbert Spaeni, 55, Barron Holstein breeder and ex Madison detective, died in a one car crash near Amery. his son 1st Lt. Herbert Spaeni Jr. was killed in 1960. Funeral in Barron.

Births Decline in Wisconsin for Sixth Straight Year

Wisconsin births fell for the sixth year running in 1966 with an estimated total near 80,000 and a birth rate of 19.1 per 1000, the State Board of Health reported. Deaths rose slightly but the death rate also edged up marginally. 1968 death count is shown as about 40,300 for 1966, while marriages stayed high at around 41,000.

Albany postmaster Miss Shirley Conway announces retirement at month end after 36 years in service. Walter Reasa will serve as acting postmaster until a successor is appointed. Conway became acting postmaster Feb 1 1955 and was appointed in May 1956. Market unsettled as Wisconsin cheddar prices show varied, with blocks and daisies around 46 to 52 cents per pound.
