Monroe residents plan Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services across multiple churches. Immanuel EUE Church hosts The Christmas Story at 7:30 p.m. with Youth Fellowship aid. St John’s United Church of Christ presents a living nativity on the church lawn 6:30 to 11 p.m. followed by an 11 p.m. candlelight service. Grace Lutheran, Mt. Olive Evangelical Lutheran, St. Victor’s Catholic, Union Presbyterian and New Apostolic churches schedule late night or morning masses and ceremonies led by their pastors. First Methodist holds a Christmas Eve service at 11 p.m. with Rev. Glen H. Ridnour conducting.

Bishop H. Clifford Northcott, hospitalized in Cincinnati for six weeks after a stroke, arrived home in Madison Tuesday night to a warm reception from his wife and about 20 friends and associates. He is not yet able to resume duties.
The live Nativity at St. John's Church of Christ 1724 14th Street in Monroe is the season’s highlight. More than 600 Youth Fellowship members perform nightly until 11 pm, starting at 6 pm, with live manger scene and sheep.
Minnie Leerhoff 70 a longtime Winslow housekeeper at the Fred J. Karlen home died at Deaconess hospital Freeport after a 13 day stay following surgery. She was born in Riddott Illinois April 24 1888 and is survived by sister in law Ella Leerhoff and nephew Harold of Freeport. Services set for 1:30 p m Saturday at Winslow EUB church with burial in Oakland cemetery Freeport.
New York stock market reversed early today for a moderate rally after an opening loss. Gains of fractions to about a point led by main issues, balancing a spread of small losses.
Striking American Airlines pilots consider contract terms from federal mediators to end their walk out. American accepted the peace proposal covering wages flight hours sick leave and vacations and hopes pilots will follow suit. A spokesman said a decision is likely today as the strike grounded a major carrier during peak travel season.
Pilgrims gathered in Bethlehem for Christmas Eve prayers as 4,000 to 5,000 foreign visitors and 1,737 Christians from Israel crossed the line to attend services. President Eisenhower spoke in Washington as the national Christmas tree was lit.
