Area Youth Is Hurt In County Accident
Mathew G. Mitchell, 17, of South Wayne, suffered a bruised upper lip and an oral injury when the car he drove went out of control nine miles northwest of Monroe on a town road. Deputies reported the incident on December 21 at 9 05 a.m. The car had complete front end damage. Pope Paul VI urged the United States to suspend bombing in Vietnam and offered to mediate in the conflict.

Seventeen men escape cave in near Tehachapi tunnel
Seventeen men trapped for 19 hours by a cave in in a snowbound Tehachapi mountain tunnel crawled through a narrow passage to safety. Fellow workers had earlier feared a four to five day wait as they worked from three directions. A solo dig through 80 feet of debris opened a free path and the group reached the 1 1 2 mile long State Water Project tunnel.

Pilot Roy True Injured In Beloit Private Airport Crash
Roy True former proprietor of Mon roe Air Service suffered severe head injuries in a crash landing at his private Beloit area airport near Winnebago County Illinois while moving a plane from Janesville Wisconsin. He underwent surgery planned for 11 a.m. midmorning reports said his Beloit Hospital condition was fair to good.

Adolf Wandfluh former Monroe plant chief dies at 74
Adolf Wandfluh retired superintendent of Monroe sewage disposal plant died of a coronary heart attack at 4 30 p m on December 21, the day after his 74th birthday. Born December 20 1893 in Canton Bern Switzerland he came to Monroe after farming and construction work in Michigan. He served in World War I and later helped guard ore docks in Superior. He leaves a widow Gladys and a son Wesley plus siblings in Switzerland. Services are set for December 23 at Shriner-Neushwander Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
