British Jet Crashes in Turkey Killing 27

A British Comet4 jet airliner crashed after takeoff from Ankara airport killing 27 of 34 aboard. Four Americans survived among seven, reportedly all from the rear cabin which remained relatively intact.

Youth faces plea in Freeport bank impersonation case

A 21 year old Brodhead man Arthur N Krattiger posted 41000 bond after appearing before U S Commissioner James Cavanaugh in Freeport. He was due to reappear later today to enter a plea in a case accusing him of impersonating an FBI agent to gain entry to the Bank of Durand. Krattiger was arrested by Illinois state troopers earlier while in his 1962 convertible near the bank. Police found a loaded pistol, clothing, a toy badge and badge case, an empty case and altered plates in the car.

Company B Men Return Salute From Fort Lewis

Co B 2nd Battle Group 128th Infantry returned a 2100 mile salute Monday night as nearly 100 men thanked Monroe for Christmas gifts and greetings. They taped their Christmas Salute Concert and recorded home town salutes at a mess hall party.

Wisconsin Troops Donate Blood for Heart Surgery Kids

Seventy one members of the 32nd Division, on temporary duty at Yakima Firing Center, volunteered to donate blood for three children in need of open heart surgery. One patient is seven year old Diane Riley, daughter of Sgt. Edward Riley of Janesville. The effort followed a radio alert and the Yakima Red Cross chapter manager said the donors prevented an emergency draw.

Bus Group Braces for Winter Storm Journey to Mendota

A charter bus carrying 39 Lions Club members heads from Central City Nebraska toward Mendota Illinois as a Midwest snow storm looms. Sgt David Babler reports the unit left Central City and should reach Mendota by 7 to 8 p m. Families will gather at the Armory for a Christmas telethon reunion with Ft Lewis servicemen and Santa Claus.

Senator Picked Up Faces Drunk Charge

MALOU and state Sen Leland McParland was taken custody Thursday night after police found him lying in a street. He faced drunkenness charges and was held for about two hours at the city jail. At another senator’s request Howard Cameron was hospitalized overnight after saying McParland had been under a doctor’s care.

Swift Reversal On Nelson Tax Plan Surprises Capitol

In Madison the State Senate reversed course on Gov. Nelson's tax compromise by 17-14, with 9 Republicans and 8 Democrats crossing party lines. The measure heads back to the Assembly with 18 amendments. Keppler's mill-rate tweak was added and approved 25-6. The House had earlier 19-12 to reconsider, and a later Senate vote 23-9 expunged its record before returning the bill to the House.

Tshombe Faces Congo Deadline

Premier Cyrille Adoula sets next Wednesday as the deadline for Katanga to honor Moise Tshombe's unity pact with eight points. Tshombe says ratification by his cabinet and assembly will take at least 10 days, while Belgians and UN officials expect enforcement of the agreement.
