Washington reports Mariner II nears Venus for a near 20 000 mile flyby to study its cloud veiled surface. The probe uses radio and heat measurements as it becomes the farthest man made signal from Earth while facing solar panel power fluctuations and past technical woes.
A crowds of women packed the House hearing room as the un American Activities subcommittee wrapped up three days of Women Strike for Peace testimony. WSP leaders vow a wreath laid at a Capitol statue and a march to the White House with anti nuclear testing posters.
Beloit considers turning Beloit Municipal Hospital into a private nonprofit facility for 50 years at one dollar annually. The plan includes strict conditions to preserve employee salaries and benefits and safeguard lease termination. The 1927 hospital now serves about 60 000 people beyond Beloit and would share future costs with the wider community.
Pfc. Fred D. Metcalfe 21 of Milwaukee has admitted killing a German housewife Irmgard Habermann 25 in Munich. He told Army interrogators he knifed her after she insulted him on Tuesday night.
The Monroe Planning Commission accepted Green Engineering Co's 101 page general development plan outlining 20 year community needs. The plan aims as a guide, not a binding expansion, with a bypass for east west traffic north of Monroe and a new 7th Avenue route for Highway 69. Road work expected include grading next year and paving in 1964 along with street widenings and possible removal of Illinois Central trackage near the Jos Huber Brewery. A citizens planning committee is proposed to work with the plan commission while zoning and master plans remain under preparation.
King Hassan II announced on Wednesday his plan to visit the United States during the last two weeks of March. The announcement was made from Rabat, Morocco, outlining the upcoming diplomatic trip and schedule.
Sister M Agatha administrator of St Anthony hospital in Hays reports a new oil well on land willed to the Sisters of St Anthony. The well drills to 3342 feet and flows 37 barrels an hour. Lease terms give the hospital a share from oil profits to aid patients. The discovery followed a novena and prayers for oil.
U S Secretary of State Dean Rusk urged NATO to take the initiative in the cold war at the winter ministerial meeting in Paris. He cited Cuba as a turning point and warned the Soviet Union on nuclear tests while proposing Western studies of major diplomatic problems to strengthen the Atlantic alliance. Rusk noted U S concessions are capped and cited Khrushchev Peking tensions as signs of growing Western leverage.
Miss Sara Elizabeth Sadie Simmons aged 74 died at 4 yesterday afternoon at her home 519 1th street from a heart condition. Born December 3, 1888 in Washington Township she lived in the Monroe area and was a member of the First Methodist church. Surviving are two brothers George W. and Charlton S. two sisters Mazie L. and Stella E. Prechel with a sister Avis Schmid deceased July 22 1957. Services Saturday at 3 p.m. at Stuessy funeral home with burial in Greenwood cemetery. Friends may call tomorrow afternoon.
A massive earth collapse at the West Driefontein gold mine in Johannesburg, South Africa, killed 34 workers and injured 20. The three story plant cave-in occurred on Wednesday at the site described as the world's richest gold mine.
President Kennedy said the United States will deny American cargoes to non Communist ships trading with Cuba. New regulations will take effect in about two weeks as Washington tightens the Cuba policy and pressures Soviet support. He noted ongoing U.S Soviet talks in New York and pledged to verify removal of Soviet missiles and jets from Cuba. Britain and Norway objected to the proposed rules.
Deputies investigated a burglary at Ullom school during the night. Stolen items include a radio, money from a teacher’s desk, pencils, and basketballs from the basement. Christmas gifts prepared by students also vanished. Entry was gained by breaking a basement window and wire mesh.

At the Midwest farm group convention in Des Moines Iowa delegates debated the value of all out holding actions by the National Farmers Organization to lift prices. Incumbent NFC president Oren Lee Staley defended holding actions as the only legal path to fair prices while challengers Bob Casper and Harold Woodward urged limited or no broad action and favored targeted moves with no long contracts.
The United States proposes turning over the Skybolt rocket program to Britain at no cost. Britain may take over the project in the U S or in Britain if capable. Britain accepts U S study and other replacement proposals as a possible path forward for the 1100 mile air launched rocket. The program has cost the United States about $500 million in development.
Wisconsin warmed from subzero conditions as light snow moved in across the southeast and northwest. Heaviest accumulations reached Milwaukee Green Bay Racine Park Falls Superior Wausau Madison Beloit and Eau Claire with 0.25 to 1 inch and slippery intersections. Temperatures ranged from 3 below at Wausau to 13 degrees in Green Bay with other readings from Beloit to Racine near freezing.

The second and final tetanus clinic for Monroe will be held at the Community Center from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Those who missed the first session may take their first shot tomorrow. a second shot a month later must be scheduled with a physician. The last clinic at Brodhead had 193 participants. Shots were given by Dr. William E. Hein of Brodhead and Sam Johnson at the Monroe Clinic.
The Wisconsin Industrial Commission reported 35,268 unemployment claims filed in the week ending Saturday, up from 32,887 the prior week.
