Cable Car Runs Wild in Frisco Hurts 21 People

A Hyde Street cable car ran out of control on a rain slick steep in San Francisco. It rammed a car causing a fire, then hit nine more vehicles. Ambulances carried 27 to hospitals for burns and injuries. One man, James V. Baalen, 30, was critically burned. The car, led by gripman Arthur Coats and conductor Lou Abels, lost grip on the underground cable. The incident recalls the system invented by Andrew Hallidie in 1873.
