Merle Downing Dies at 54 in Iowa City Veterans Hospital
Merle Edward Downing 54 of Orangeville died yesterday at the Iowa City veterans hospital where he had been a surgical patient for five weeks. He was born September 4, 1901, in West Gate and married Theo Mae Runkle on April 12, 1929. He lived in Madison 13 years before moving to Orangeville in 1953 and worked 21 years for Hoover Vacuum Cleaner Co. He is survived by his wife, his mother in Waterloo Iowa, two brothers Roy of Elkhart Indiana and Harold of Portland Oregon, and four sisters Mrs. John fitter of Les, Mrs. Roy Jeffords of Fr, Mrs. Fred Brubaker of Capron Illinois, and Mrs. Emil Shackow of Waterloo. Funeral services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Burlington Cramer funeral home with Rev Milford Best officiating. Burial will follow in the Orange cemetery.

Gieseking's Wife and Soldier Die in German Bus Crash
Mrs. Walter Gieseking, 66, wife of famed pianist, and an American soldier were killed in a bus accident in UGART Germany Friday night. Eleven others injured, including seven soldiers and four civilians. Unofficial sources name Specialist 2 Homer Bryan as the American killed. The Giesekings were on the way to Rome where the pianist was to perform with the St. Cecilia Orchestra Sunday.

Marvin Griffin in effigy, broke into the state capitol, and staged a pre dawn demonstration at the governor's mansion. Officials later said Tech would be allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl against Pittsburgh. The protest drew about 2,500 demonstrators, who also hanged a Griffin effigy at the Tech campus.
